Friday Catch Up
I should know by now that some of my horrors, where everything seems awful and I'm convinced that I'm not worth the DNA I'm written on, are entirely about something being wrong with the current script, which, this morning I fixed, so hello world, hello trees, hello flowers!
Anyhow, tomorrow I'll be at the MCM Expo in London's docklands, signing your things at 1pm, then dashing up to Camden where (as mentioned in a previous post), I'll be talking at the London Screenwriters' Festival from 3.30pm. So I hope to see some of you there. In the meantime -
I'm interviewed in issue 9 of Comic Heroes magazine, about DC's New 52. That's out now.
If you want to hear my wife, Caroline Symcox, talking about her Doctor Who audio plays, and how she became a vicar, there's a short podcast interview with her here.
And if you want to see the first five pages of Stormwatch #3, featuring Miguel Sepulveda's lovely artwork, you need go no further than here.
And now I'm off to lunch with Kim Newman and friends, which I'm sure will be delightful as always. Until next time, Cheerio!

Whilst I can't claim to be a "real" writer, more of a daily witterer in Blogworld, I just felt that I should remark upon how very familiar your opening paragraph seemed.
I am, as ever, grateful to find out that it's really not just me who gets these "I'm so unworthy" moments.
I just wish I could express them just as pithily... M.
You'll be at the MCM Expo signing? I Better pack Demon Knights #1 then :D
The preview for Stormwatch looks fantastic and I like Harry Tanner is becoming a possible great villain. I can’t wait to see him square off against the Midnighter
Go Apollo! um... did you give him a power up? What's this being able to tap into their transmitters thing? That's new. And here I was expecting him to be powered DOWN in the DCU so he didn't step on Superman's toes. :p
Not your fault, but still not digging the art, I'm afraid. :-/
I think we all get that feeling, Mawh. Weird thing: seconds before I got the email notice of your post, I saw a scratched graffiti on an underground train: 'next idea: Mwah!' So, erm, got an idea for me? I'll see you at MCM, YSK. Chris: you shall! Raye: yes, I changed his powers a bit. It's fun.
That's fair, though I hope not TOO much is changed. I thought the characters were great as they were, and did not need any changes to work in the DCU, aside from the obvious need to change some of their origins. I'm fine with their history being gone and getting a new origin, but I'm not really too interested in seeing essentially a new character in terms of powers/personality/appearance with the name of one of my old favorites slapped on. (though cosmetic changes aside, the changes in Stormwatch have been minor compared to some) Some of the changges made to characters at DC feel like change for change's sake, where the changes do nothing to serve the story or enhance the character, just superfluous random details altered for no real reason. I get like, Supergirl is completely rebooted so everything is new, and all. So if she gets soem tweaked powers that's ok if it's part of the story. But skinny Amanda Waller, or whatever, I just have to think to myself 'why?' It seems the only ones who will care about it are old fans who are pissed. ps. Apollo needs his white hair back, and Midnighter totally does not have red eyes, that's Jack's thing. ;)
Though I did note that Angie's horrid taste in men (aside from Jack) continues. :p
Thanks for signing my copy of Demon Knights #1, it was very nice talking with you. I got lucky, I was first in line.
Raye: I've certainly done some 'changes for changes' sake', simply to add things I liked or could have fun with. It never occurred to me that to do such would be seen to mean that anything was wrong with how it was done before. I think that's quite a strange reading, really. One of the things I like about the New 52 is that it got rid of the tyranny of continuity, and let creators change things. The only criteria for the success of those changes should be whether or not they're interesting. Good to meet you, YSK!
Thanks for that link to Caroline's interview - Shame it's so short. Does she get time to do any writing these days?
[IS STRUK BY A THORT] [BITES LIP]
Ummm... It belatedly occurs to me to wonder if Caroline would *mind* that she's being plugged in the same post as a song in support of about the St Paul's protesters...? (See my LJ.)
She hasn't had time to write any fiction lately, but she's always said she wants to write another Big Finish. And, in general, she feels the same way about the protests as I do. I think a majority of Anglicans feel the same way.
I get what you're saying, but at the same time, by taking away the things fans like about a character, it's like taking away the character themselves. It's not like this is Ultimate, where they're still there in another book the way they were, Wildstorm and the old universe is gone, this is all we have. While i agree that ultimately story trumps all, part of the fun (for some people) of fiction is finding a character you like and following them. In the case of Apollo, I can always read back issues, yeah. but frankly he was often mistreated or ignored in the books, shoved to the background or treated as a victim, and I was hoping to see him brought to the prominence he deserves.
Apollo wasn't appealing because of how he was the same to Superman, it was in how he was kinda similar, but also very different. One of the things I always liked about him was how thematic he was. Where Superman was SAID to be powered by the sun, but his powers never really showed it, Apollo blatantly SHOWED the connection. From his name, to his costume, to (most of) his powers, to weakening without exposure to sunlight, to his halo. (taken from the Titan, Helios, not just to look cool) Even his flight was explained in the books as him being propelled by light. Adding in new powers dilutes that part of the appeal for me, and combined with all the changes to his appearance, it's like it's not even the same character anymore in a lot of ways.
I think I get what you're doing, light is just radiation, and so are radio waves, so he can tap into both, right? Be that as it may, it's not really the first thing that leaps to mind for a solar themed character, and isn't that really more Captain Atom's thing, anyway?
I think now we're arguing about tiny things. Radio is very much part of what a star does. And, you know, there comes a point where I go: 'okay, but I'm doing it anyway'.
