Dandy-Walker

You remember that run on Batman and Robin I did, where one character was someone who'd been shot in the head, but lived on because of her, as yet undiagnosed, hydrocephalus? Well, after that went out, Eric Cole and Terri Eldridge from the Dandy-Walker Alliance got in touch. This is the charity which helps people that suffer from this condition, widely known as Dandy-Walker Syndrome. Somewhat charitably, they were pleased that I'd (through the dubious means of Batman villainy) increased awareness of the condition, and I said I'd sort out a charity comic strip for them. Well, it took a while, but thanks to the kindness of artist Mike Collins (yes, he of Paul and Mike fame, as well as Doctor Who and the X-Men, etc.), we got it sorted. Go take a look here, spread the word, and, while you're at it, why not hit the donation button underneath and help out a very good cause?

In other news, on Friday I've been invited to speak at King's College London at the Bad Writing academic conference ('you were the first writer we thought of!') It's about genre writing's relationship with literature, and my lecture's going to be on the subject of what genre definitions, from dark fantasy to paranormal romance, actually mean. Admittance is free, but you have to drop them a line beforehand.

I've got a couple of quotes in this short Independent article about Captain Britain.

And the results of the Demon Knights character poll indicate that the Shining Knight is your favourite. Of the new characters, the Horsewoman (only seen in silent silhouette, but with plenty of pre-publicity) leads, but there weren't such big intros for the new characters in this title. I hope you'll grow to care for them all.

Until next time, Cheerio!

I see that MI:13 will be in Ellis' Secret Avengers next month. You two seem to have ended up on opposite books. I hope Marvel brings out another Captain Britain book soon.

I've read all of the new 52 that I plan to, and I to say that Demon Knights it my favourite. Have you had time read many of the new titles? Do you have any favourites?

I'm looking forward to that. He'll treat them well, I'm sure. I'm enjoying Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Batgirl, and basically anything in The Edge/Dark lines.

Nice one Paul regarding the Dandy Walker! Although rare it's one of those more common than you think problems and the more people get the chance to learn about this illness the better!

  • Jeff Cannell Says:

    Paul,
Those issues prompted me to research the illness.
I'm fairly interested in the concept of neuro-elasticity, and the brain's ability to dynamically reroute around broken or damaged tissue.

(specifically interested in the affects of praying the hours and centering prayer on ongoing brain development)

The reading really gave me a bit of preparation for the birth of my nephew- who had a large cyst that has really affected his brain development. I'm glad that antiquated views on neuroscience don't limit our hope for situations like this.

Thanks for writing thought provoking stories that are so much fun-- looking forward to picking up Demon Knights 2 tomorrow morning!

Thanks. I'm glad a Batman villain has opened a few doors!
