Action Comics #900
Today's the day when Action Comics #900 is out (in the States, and depending on what the Bank Holidays are doing to shipping, I think in the UK as well). It's a truly enormous beast (96 pages, including a 51 page lead story) that wraps up 'The Black Ring' and begins Superman's battle with Doomsday in the same story. Plus, there are back up stories by Damon Lindelof and Ryan Sook, David Goyer and Miguel Sepulveda, Geoff Johns and Gary Frank and Paul Dini and R.B.Silva. (There are some art surprises to be found in the lead story too.) There's Richard Donner and Derek Hoffman presenting a screenplay that's storyboarded by Matt Camp. There's a two page spread by Brian Stelfreeze. And as well as this brilliant cover by David Finch...

You can find variants by Alex Ross...

And Adam Hughes.

I've watched my editors Matt Idelson and Wil Moss put this together over the last few months, and believe me when I say it's a labour of love. Pete Woods and I are insanely proud of the lead story, and it's great that all these good folk opted to join in. We've all been out and about doing publicity for this monster, and these are just the interviews I've caught so far: Pete Woods talks to Wired's Geek Dad; I pop up on Ain't It Cool News; and me and Damon Lindelof talk to CNN.
To see a five page preview of the issue, hop over to DC'S The Source.

One of the best things about Eastercon this weekend (I'll talk about it at greater length later) was getting to show my SF friends my comics work. Action #900 feels like a chance to do that with the mainstream world. So there'll be a spring in my step today, and at the Clarke Awards tonight. Until next time, Cheerio!

I really like the first cover. There's something very unsettling about it.
Question: Have they told you when Knight & Squire might be out in trade?
Paul,
You outdid yourself. It was the best look at Luthor in ages. And it was my favorite look at Clark in ages. I grew up with the "Clark is real and makes Superman so super." The humanist take as opposed to the pre-crisis Superman Movie ("alien jesus sent here to save us") take.
Superman is important to me personally first and foremost as a symbol of the best we can be. Everything Luthor claims to be but can't get his head around, really. I loved All Star Superman, but that wasn't my Superman. This was, and it was masterfully done. Thank you.
There's a ton of stuff I was going to say, but I'll make it short and just say thanks. This book was an absolute joy to read. Superman's always been my favorite of everything, and it's wonderful to see him treated with such respect and enthusiasm. Can't wait to see what's next!
Muc: it'll be out at the end of June. Look for it as Batman: Knight and Squire. Matt: thanks very much, that's exactly what I was after. Reno: thank you so much!
Hmm... Not having a local comics store, I went over to the DC iPad app to buy the comic and take a look. Digitally available only up to #889 at this time. So much for the possibilities of digital distribution to counter the lack of comics stores and prohibitive overseas postage. I guess I'll just have to try and remember to look again in a year or so if I still feel interested at that time. :-(
How might I help you with this problem?
Paul,
Your work Action has been fantastic! You set the bar higher for other writers in comics. They'll all be judged by how close they can get to your originality and wit.
They'll all fail, though.
Sad.
Clone yourself! That's it!!!
Send a PC2 to Marvel for Spider-Man, one to IDW for.....whatever they're doing and one more to DC just to keep ahead.
You've livened up the field.I hope I haven't increased your hat size too much, but I really like your style.
Thank you!
Paul: re: digital version -- there's probably nothing you can do, and I'm not blaming you. I was just lamenting the fact that I can't get an interesting-sounding comic into my hands.
If you happen to meet with someone at DC who could possibly influence their digital publishing schedules, please mention the issue. But as said, I don't mean to infer this is your responsibility in any way.
Not at all, no problem.
