It's Dark X-Men Day

Just a quick note to say that Dark X-Men #4, by myself, Loving Leonard Kirk and Naughty Nick Lowe is in US comic stores today, UK comic shops on Thursday. A preview of the first five pages can be found here. From which you can work out which classic rock artiste is featured in the character descriptions this issue.

A picture of Nick Lowe as Mary Jane Watson out of Spider-Man (beside Titanic Tom Brevoort as Gwen Stacy), meanwhile, nicked off the Millarworld Forums, can be found here:

Tom doesn't look into it, but Nick... I think he's smiling just a bit too much.

In other news, for UK readers only, my old friend (and former 2000AD editor) David Bishop has his first screenwriting gig on telly today, an episode of Doctors called 'A Pill for Every Ill', broadcast at 1.45pm on BBC1, and available for a week after that on the IPlayer. I did one of these, and it remains a good place to start out in television.

Until Ten Things this weekend, Cheerio!

Here's my review of issue #4. Great stuff, as ever, Paul.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

    Thanks very much, Dave!

    TERESA'S EVENING COMMUTE
    by Teresa Jusino

Loosely based on a true story. Sort of.

    PAGE 1 (4 Panels)

    Panel One:

Winter in NYC. Teresa sitting in a crowded, rush-hour subway car reading a copy of Dark X-Men Issue #4, holding the book close to her face, deep in concentration. The woman seated next to her has a large tote bag on the floor next to Teresa's foot.

BOX: Teresa Jusino. Adorable New Yorker and writer of genre fiction. Young Americans.

    Panel Two:

Close-up of the page she's reading; the Dark X-Men being told that they have to become part of the big psychic brain, ending w/Dark Beast saying "I would be delighted!"

    Panel Three:

Close-up of Teresa's worried face (capture a little lip quiver if possible).

    Teresa:
    (shaky word balloon) No...

    Panel Four:

Teresa has JUMPED UP and is screaming at the comic in her hand as everyone around her leans away from her in shock/annoyance.

Teresa: NOOOOOO! Don't let DARK BEAST around ANY brains! EVER! Even if it IS Norman Osborn! For F#@K'S SAKE, DON'T DO IT!

    PAGE 2 (2 panels)

    Panel One:

Teresa realizes that everyone is staring at her and looks embarrassed. The woman next to her is warily reaching for her tote bag on the floor trying not to make eye contact.

    Panel Two:

The woman next to Teresa has quickly clutched her tote to her chest and is sitting cross-legged facing away from Teresa, trying to pull her body as far away from her as possible. The person on the other side of Teresa has also moved away an inch or two. Teresa sits with Dark X-Men open on her lap, biting her lip sheepishly, but with a look that says that she's going to keep on reading and having strong opinions about what's happening in the story, even if only in her head, no matter what anyone says! So there. Harumph.

    Teresa: Harumph.

    END.

(Bee-tee-dubs, this was a great issue! Can't wait for Part 5!)

    :)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Oh, thank you! One of the best things about comics is when mates actually read this stuff! Cheers.

  • Doop Says:

When Nate tells Mystique that she betrayed his father (referring to her actions in Messiah Complex), does he know that she was doing that to save her daughter?

  • Paul Cornell Says:

He does, because he learned everything anyone knows, and that he bothered to pay attention to when confronted with the whole human unconscious, up until now. But that doesn't change his feelings about Mystique's nature. And he is willing to let her go, rather than exploit those bombs.

  • Teresa Says:

Shoot! I met Tom B. tonight at a "25 Years of Spider-Man" talk at the Museum of Comic Book Art, and I meant to mention this picture of him, but I forgot!! #TeresaFail I did, however, remind him that little girls would enjoy reading comics, too, and that Marvel should always keep that in mind when marketing them. I think I delivered the more important message. But I really wanted to tell him how hot he looked as Gwen Stacy! :)

Also met Stephen Wacker, who's very cool, and we are both Norah Winters fans! :) This makes me gleeful - also hopeful that she and Peter Parker will eventually get together for serious-like.

  • Morgan Piersanti Says:

    Mystique: What are you think?

Mimic: It's like my powers are all mine and it's all okay.

Mystique: I think to want this too much is to want to... die.

Mimic: Up ahead, is that Osborn's mind we're heading for? It reminds me of... My own.

The Mimic is my favorite comic character and
your characterization of the Mimic makes me smile.

Good, Bad, and Grey in the middle.

    Dark X-Men # 5 can't get here soon enough.

    Thanks, again.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

T: Tom and Stephen are great, but I think you missed an opportunity there! Morgan: thanks very much. I rather like him too, way back to his first appearances. He nearly has everything, and to a small boy like I was at the time, it was perplexing why he wasn't happy with it.

Sorry to come off as agressive here Mr Cornell but Dark x-men disappointed me in the end. At the end, it's revealed that Norman is da super smart, his X-Men are whipped dogs, and that Nate made a huge mistake in thinking that Mystique or any of Osborn's other goons had a single spark of decency or heroism in them. To complete the insult, the book ends with Osborn getting the last word in, "I OWN TOMORROW."
I know that some people don't like Nate. But what was the point? "You suck for being an X-Man fan, read Wolverine instead?" IMHO if it ended by a setback and Osborn's team being taught a cryptic lesson by Nate before he disappears, instead of YAY BAD GUYS WIN, it wouldn't have devalued his return. Besides I can't see Mystique workingfor Osborn without pulling the trigger on him ,bomb or whatsoever

Wilson Fisk with Osborn's job? That would be AWESOME.He fills a certain Luthor-like space in the MU & his charisma & courage is off the charts.

But anyway, would you be interested in writing Apocalypse? He is a complex mutant in mind & ideology that I thought you could give the greatness he deserves (if the occasion presents itself that is)!Bad writing has harmed him while his fight with cable (underrated as he is) should have been the focus of a great epic saga. I 'd say the same thing for Mr Sinister . I hope Marvel would give you a mini-series about his glorious return uniting both the Marauders and the Nasty Boys to hunt down and destroy Mystique & miss sinister with a passion that rivals the intensity of the Inferno. Then send the ashes to the X-Office as a warning to any writer or artist that is foolish enough to spit on such an awesome villian ever again.
BTW how come people are comfortable with freaking dark beast around. in Age of Apocalypse ,this is the guy that'd make Jack the Ripper & Josef Mengele & the heroes don't say "say this guy is suspicious ,shouldn't we keep an eye on him?"
Or even crazier! the merry crew of MI:13 dealing with Stryfe the chaos bringer & war enabler per excellence back from hell itself!

Anyway Mr Cornell thanks for listening to my ramblings (BTW you write a great Joker!he is close to the DeMatteis,Dini or Dixon versions & that sir i tip my hat to) & i definitely say that the Wisdom mini-series was great & MI:13 was awesome despite secret invasion (hey you can find gold in the mud!)

    your friend from Tunisia
    Kais Saidi

  • Paul Cornell Says:

That was the feeling I was after, Kais, that sense of anger at Osborn and dissatisfaction with how it all worked out. Glad to hear from a Tunisian comics writer. Cheers.

  • Anonymous Says:

Actually sir i'm not a writer.merely a student & your casual comics fan, but i feel frankly honored that you answered my post!

oh BTW since you'll write superman ,can you please bring Superboy's personnality back? i haven't been enjoying one of my favs since young justice was replaced by gloom..er..teen titans & Johns kinda missed the mark with that since he replaced wonderful & unique characters like kon-el or impulse by extremely bland clones of perez wolfman era (a classic era that ended so you can't top that DC! move on...)
please give us kon-el's cocky personality that we knew and loved so well in 'Reign', His series, Him with the Ravers, and Young Justice...the brave, cocky, happy & seductive superboy with most importantly tactile telekinesis!
As for the rest(Steel;Kara,Clark & Hank Henshaw), i can only trust you .After all you literally made an awesome run with Luthor the human lucifer which made us hear Clancy Brown 's voice anytime we read him

by Kais Saidi (actually not a writer but a mere reader who thinks 90's comics are actually better than what most think)

eelallikae wa rabbi maak! (arabic for goodbye & God be with you (now of course no one can prove its existence or inexistence but i personally believe that God is beyond comprehension thus people should not really tend to overthink it & tolerate & respect each other))

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I hope you liked my Superman now you've had a chance to see him, Kais. Thanks very much.
