The 12 Blogs of Christmas: Four. Tweet Answer Day.

UPDATE: Have just gone 'over status update limit' on Twitter! They tell me to 'please try again in a few hours'. Sorry! I think that's it for the day. See end of this blog for details, and thank you all.

Today's the day that, between 10am and 10pm my time, I'll be answering every Tweet sent to Paul_Cornell on my Twitter account. (Please use the tag #QandC.) Or as Laurie Pink would have it...

It'll probably be exactly the opposite, me sitting there with a cup of tea, the Test Match on in the background, waiting for anyone to show up. There really should be tumbleweed. I'm going to add the best of the exchanges here, updating the blog as they happen. (It's a big day for Caroline too, I'll tell you about that when she's done.)

But while we're waiting to begin, there are a couple of things I want to mention first. As I mentioned once before, my friends Anne K.G. Murphy and Brian Gray are in the running to be the recipients of the Trans Atlantic Fan Fund this coming year. This is a funding contest whereby some American fans are sponsored to come over and attend Eastercon, and do other fannish business. (There's also such a contest going in the other direction.) They're up against beloved Hugo-winning sweetheart fan-favourite artist Frank Wu, so they're kind of the underdog here. And the deadline is December 22nd! So please pop over, read the rules, read up on Anne and Brian and consider donating for them. It's one of the most direct ways to participate in the life of SF fandom. All this can be found here.

I almost want to put on a Harry Hill voice here, but I'm honestly flattered: man gets Human Nature tattoo in Latin!

And... Copy of Happy Endings released into the wild at Bracken Ridge, Queensland!

So, after 10am, you can expect to see a record of my long conversation today start to appear here. Until then, Cheerio!

10am: Okay, a bit of a backlog! The oddest so far from Geek_The_Cat, who said that the newspapers were calling Prince William 'The Shadow King' and wouldn't that make good X-Men casting and from JamesPain who asked what question I'd use to sell triple glazing, door to door. Plus, X-Men continuity issues, will I come to the Aylesbury SF meet-up (yes, eventually!) and no, I'm not on the next season of Doctor Who.

Hmm, indeed, Braxiatel, my favourite Womble is Bungo. I only just realised. And I settled RichMOMB's office debate that eyebrows count as facial hair.

No, Rob Williams, it was not your destiny to write Captain Britain, it was mine!

Loads of people asking what character I'd like to write most: Thor!

SquirrelyTonks: if you seek to fall asleep to a (really good, I'm not saying it's dull) Who story, I'd recommend 'The Mind Robber'.

SiSpurrier asks me which Judge Dredd block I'm support in a fight. I decline.

The12thDoctor and many others ask who I'd cast as the Doctor: Julian Barratt.

JohnReppion: I'm looking forward to some cheese at Christmas.

The stupidest thing I've ever done, markawilliams: arguing in script meetings, apart from various things in my personal life.

Julioangelortiz: I love New York, Wellington, Kyoto and the California coast.

Fave X-Men I'm not writing, ComicAttack: Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde.

NeilPerryman: I think about Dr. Who on average half a dozen times a day!

There's no such thing as writer's block, Iambickilometer, and yes, injculbard, I eat meat on Christmas Eve, interesting to hear the Polish tradition that you don't.

Emmzzi: I'd love to judge a Dalek cake sculpting contest!

Who would win between Reed Richards and the Doctor, cyberauron: the Doctor!

LtGrice: Marvel's most iconic female character: I'd say Spider-Woman right now.

ChrisDWilliams: first Target book was The Cave Monsters, before I'd seen any Who on TV!

Purserhallard: yes, I think the wishes of dead authors concerning their work should be respected. Why do you ask?

Phew, bit of a lull around 11.45am. Have answered 110 Tweets so far.

Yeah, thanks for this, OTralala: 'The women in Pride and Prejudice keep women in their place; the men - good & bad - offer the chance of escape. Discuss.'

Do I get grief for theism in fandom, from ThatNeilGuy: only sometimes, but it's really bad when it happens.

Fazzinchi, favourite cricket memory: I saw Botham play when I was very young.

Dozeymagz: the comic writer I admire most is Bill Willingham.

And at noon, I knock off for lunch, having answered 115 Tweets! Phew, let's hope it slows down a bit this afternoon...

Here's Caroline's big news: she's back from her viva and her thesis, pending some small edits, has been recommended for MLit status. Meaning that she'll soon have her third Masters degree. She was very nervous this morning!

Phew, just ripped through about 80 tweets left during lunch. Which Who story would I return to the archive, the Angry Robot mob being cheeky, Paul Raven asking whether fandoms help or hinder genre (a question which deserves an essay from him rather than a tweet from me) 'Could you discuss the art of a story pitch?' Wasn't my Hugo logo better than the winner (erm, no) and the only 'would you co-write with me' so far, which I was a bit brusque in reply to. Convention invite too! It's all go!

'Why have you decided to answer people's tweets? Seems a bit odd.' Yes, Danielabogdan, it does now, rather!

Oh, and Niall Harrison saying that me adapting Baxter's NASA books would be good, which I kind of like the idea of, now I've mentioned it...

Favourite albums: Diamond Dogs; Aerial; Skylarking; Abbey Road; Overpowered.

Lady wandered in: oh, you're that chap! The flood rushed in again, and then abated. The US is just waking up. I'd assumed this would be one every minute or so, not continual! Phew!

Chris Roberson pops in, asking where his pants are. And Tom Brevoort, being lovely! Aww!

Yes, lee_robson, I'd love a cup of tea! But I can't leave my desk!

It's 2.08pm, and I've caught up. Can now pant for a moment while Caroline gets tea.

Who would win? Batman and Wolverine; Batman and Spider-Man; Rob Shearman and Tony Lee; swan and goose. I say: Batman, Batman, Shearman, swan!

Ah, but the goose knows akido.

Cheryl Morgan: why did Strauss choose to bowl with a four man attack?

Who does the best Terrance Dicks impersonation: me; Shearman or Tony Lee? I say me, but Terrance should judge a contest.

Mark Clapham asks if there's any medium I'd find too daunting: hmm, all of them, the first time, but you have to say yes and plunge in.

Have recommend Moribito as a lesser known anime show, with hard spear-wielding heroine.

What's a story idea for a class of ten year olds? Where or when would you go in your Tardis?

James Sime of Isotope Comics invites me to the shop next time I'm out there. Only too glad.

What's my zombie plan? Die in pieces.

Arrgh! I'm over the status update limit! It says please wait a few hours and try again! My experiment lies in ruins!

Oh well, thanks to all of you who took part, and sorry to all those who didn't get an answer. It was lovely to meet you all. Tomorrow: Christmas music from many fan-related folk! Cheerio!

  • Rich Says:

Good luck today! I’ll be popping in and out of twitter, looking forward to seeing how this works out ;o)

  • Matt Gibbs Says:

Enjoying following the questions and your answers on twitter. Thank you for taking the time :)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Rich: phew, that was an experience! Really enjoyed it, but tired out by sheer size of it all! Thank you, Matt.

  • 0tralala Says:

It is 0tralala - with a zero - not Otralala. And, clearly, a quotation from the hit film Labyrinth.

  • Garpu Says:

aww about the limit. And congrats to Caroline!

  • Ian Cullen Says:

    Ah well...

Looks like you all had a blast.

I have twitter but afraid I don't really use it that much. 145 words just isn't enough for someone that tends to go off on tangents like me.

But if any of your would like to add me feel free.

    Ian_M_Cullen

I'll be trying to use it more in future to promote new content on the website, and I have it set up to give heads up on my various radio shows i've been doing. I sort of forget I have it. Then get a follow notification in e-mail that reminds me. How dumb is that.

I must try and spend more time with it and figure out the custom settings and so forth.

  • Teresa Says:

Thank you for answering our questions, Paul! It was fun to watch and see all the responses! I'm just sorry that it had stopped by the time I got to work, because I never got to ask the questions I thought of on my morning commute, which were (and I'll keep them to 140 characters!):

@Paul_Cornell M. Cho: "There's a weird correlation between people who <3 StarTrek, S&M, & Ren Faire." Why do you think geeks are so kinky?

    and

@Paul_Cornell Best Brit-penned song about space? Elton John's "Rocket Man" or David Bowie's "Space Oddity?"

Your responses can be any length you like. And as this isn't a Tweet, I won't make you answer at all if you don't want to. :)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Ah, I see, Simon, thanks for pointing that out. (Labyrinth?) Thanks, Garpu and Ian. Teresa: sorry you missed out. I think it's more that geeks are keen to be open about everything they are. Having been ghettoised once, it can't get much worse is probably the thinking. And actually I like Kate Bush's version of 'Rocket Man'!
