Young Avengers Preview and Cap Art

This coming Wednesday/Thursday, depending on which side of the pond you live, Captain Britain and MI-13 #14 and Dark Reign: Young Avengers #2 will be out. (And this blog will, as always, serve as letters page for both titles.) I asked that there not be an online preview of the Cap, to preserve the spoiler content, which is colossal, but there is a preview the YA, which showcases Mighty Mark Brooks' lovely artwork, and yes, does include a Harry Hill reference, and here it is:

Meanwhile, over at Millarworld, they've been holding an art contest involving the characters from MI-13. The votes are all in, and the winner is Keith Chan with this gorgeous group shot:

Well done, Keith. If you want to see the other entries, here's the thread in question:

My life at the moment consists of finishing the novel and writing various comics, while obsessing about the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup and the status of my fantasy cricket team within it. It's become something we get together about in my little town, muttering to each other arcane things like 'isn't it horrible when one of your bowlers gets out one of your batsmen?' And at least its some compensation, as when England lost to South Africa, that one can at least know that Kallis has earned you a mountain of points. I'm also in a groove of eating current buns from the bun shop at the bottom of the lane (seriously, I have a bun shop at the bottom of the lane) and drinking that Old Jamaican Ginger Beer, which is complicated enough to satisfy while I'm making this year teetotal (apart from two glasses of red wine with Moffat). Now they've made a diet version of Old Jamaican, I might as well just plug an IV of it into my brain. I've told my agent the novel will be ready for the end of July, and I'm telling you lot now so you'll nag me about it. The comics stuff is all very exciting. Oh, and I finally finished that short story for Lou Anders, apart from, you know, a couple of bits of tinkering here and there... I've got until the end of the month, okay? I hope to get a proper holiday after the end of the book. We're looking for forests, water for adventurous boating activities, very few people, rocks to climb. Any ideas?

Until next time, Cheerio.

Sometimes I feel like living on another planet, living on the other sice of the Channel. I guess I will have to make a list of the books (and other things, like that ginger beer) you mention in your blog, and take it with me to England when I go there next month, to be able to see & taste what you're talking about.

We don't even have Cricket. But at least I know what it is...

  • YorkshireNed Says:

Of course, you do real realise a little comment about a couple of glasses of wine can set the whole internet rumour mill ablaze?

  • Adrian Says:

    And the blogosphere explodes.

Can't wait to see how this MI:13 arc closes. Is it a little unsettling that I was kinda hoping Dracula would win?

In regard to cricket, I'm from Australia so clearly I think Twenty20 is a load of rubbish. When do the Ashes start?

  • mark Says:

The Twenty 20 is now being broadcast on satellite radio on the channel that usually has all the futbol programming.

As someone who still really doesn't grasp all the nuances of the game, listening on the radio is a strange thing.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I'm glad to hear that the message of cricket is spreading. And it was only a drink with an old friend! I see no sign of the internet exploding.

  • Jay Says:

Very deserving 'draw off' winner it is too, love the Union Flag in the background, gives a real sense of 'life' to the image!

  • Wayne T Says:

All the Draw off submissions were class, Keiths was indeed amazing, Adam Murray's also rocked. As did David Marquez. I loved Jonny's Dracula as well.

With the end of MI13 in site , its mixed bag for me, cant wait to see the end of the arch, but I also dont want to see the end of this great run. fair play to all of the creative team behind this title

  • Anonymous Says:

OK, this is off-topic, but did you see last night's episode of 'Kingdom', Paul? It featured a bunch of people identified as Doctor Who fans who descend on Norfolk when an impressive crop circle is discovered in hopes of seeing a UFO. They camp out there, looking like hippies save for the 50% wearing monster masks, give the lead character magic mushrooms that cause him to 'trip' and are generally presented as the 'sci-fi loonies' of late '70s/early '80s newspaper reportage. I watched with my jaw in my lap.

  • DanielW Says:

At least your Team is still in the Twenty20 Paul.

Mind you, "my boys" (the Irish) put up a valiant struggle and did better then my national team (the Aussies).

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Goodness, Rob, that's incredible in this day and age. And not any more, Daniel! Thanks, Wayne!

  • Keith Says:

Chuffed to bits that you liked the piccie. The draw-off was a nice tribute to such a great title. Looking forward to the next ish but will be sadly missed when its gone. Cheers Paul.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

    Well done, Keith, and ta.

  • Declan Says:

Hello Paul, enjoying what remains of MI:13 although I'm not as enthused about the cricket myself. I'm an aspiring writer myself and was curious if you'd mind if I picked your brain sometime? It'd be much appreciated. Hope the novel turns out to be a solid read. I have to say, while I'm not a huge fan of either, I'll agree that Little Boots is definitely one of the more polished and different acts out there. Paloma Faith seems to be another attempt at replacing Amy Winehouse while La Roux sounds dated despite being new. Don't suppose you've heard of Deadmou5e? Heard a track on the radio the other day, pretty good. Reminded me of Olive's "You're Not Alone" a bit.

    Paul,

Now I know why no previews. Another great issue and I felt the need to cheer again. Waiting for the next Cap Wednesday is bitter-sweet indeed.

    Thanks.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks, you two. Declan: don't really do writing advice, but if you want to put up a specific question I can answer in a line, I can always do it here.

  • Ian Williams Says:

    Hi Paul,

Discovered your blog when checking to confirm you had written for Dr Who for my blog which says nice things about you.
    Cheers,

    Ian

Loving Cap Better than I hoped for. Bit of a cop out, but i will admit that I didn't see it coming. So I salute you sir, you had me intrigued for the full month. Had to rush out and get the next issue ASAP rather than wait till this coming weekend when I would be in the neighbourhood.

Accidentally picked up young avengers too. Was disappointed that there wasnt Wolverine on the cover

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thank you, you two. And yes, Mach, indeed!

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

    Hi Paul,

Not got to Young Avengers in my stack yet (Some rubbish about a mortgage application needing to be more important than reading comics, apparently...) but I read Cap #14 last night.

Damn! I honestly didn't see that twist coming. But the set up was there to see. Very clever. And yes, a preview would have totally spoiled that.

Fantastic to see Julius again. There's a guy who's spent far too long in Limbo.

I can't wait for the conclusion (Sad though it will be that it IS the conclusion).

  • Chris McAree Says:

    Hi Paul,
I'm about a month behind most people in my comic reading as I get my monthly pile delivered by mail order, living, as I do, 80 miles from my nearest comic shop. So I'm a little bit behind the curve on where the story is at the moment. But, I just read on CSBG that you have used Killpower in the final issue of Captain Britain. It's a long, long time since any snippet of comic information made this middle-aged man feel so much like a gushing fanboy again! So thank you for that, and that you for the fantastic series. It's been one of my favourites since it's inception. Now....any chance of giving a few other Marvel UK stalwarts a cameo or two.....Dragon's Claws....the original green-bodied Death's Head....the Warheads!!! (The Sleaze Bros.)!!!
    Anyway...thanks for the great writing.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks, Mr. Sword. The reversals haven't stopped, there's one more big reveal, so it's not just a big battle from here. And thanks, Chris, I get mine by mail order too. Cheers.

  • no_originality Says:

I did not see the dream room twist coming. As someone who usually sees these things a mile off....I salute you Mr.Cornell. Very nice issue, glad the fight back has begun. "Penny drops" was an excellent scene.

Was that actually Doom at the end of the issue? His little scene made me think it was someone masquerading as him to Dracula. Hmm.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

    Thanks, glad you liked it.

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

I got to Young Avengers over the weekend. Good stuff. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of these guys end up joining the ranks of Young Avengers, full time.

The whole Supervillain as art concept is quite amusing, and quite disturbing at the same time.

I'm sure the Harry Hill's TV Burp moment will go over a few American reader's heads, but it made me chuckle.

In other related news, after missing out on snatching the last copy of the 'Hell Comes to Birmingham' trade in Coventry FP (Literally by seconds) I ended up ordering a copy off Amazon.

It still hasn't shipped. I mailed them to ask why, and this is what they told me:

    "Dear Mr M A Roberts,

Thank you for contacting us at Amazon.co.uk.

Please accept our apologies for this inconvenience, but "Captain Britain And MI13 Volume 2: Hell Comes To Birmingham TPB" appears to have been a surprise sellout.

When you placed your order [# BLANKED OUT], we believed we had access to more copies - we then discovered that every one of our distributors had rapidly sold out.

Major distributors have thousands of copies on order from the publisher, all
apparently awaiting the next print run. As soon as more copies become available,we'll be able to dispatch them to our customers.

We will update you once we have received an estimated arrival date from the vendor."

A bit of a bugger for me, but it's pleasing to see that a few more people have been able to appreciate it. This can only be a good thing.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

It's always good to hear the Panini trades have sold out. Another edition to come, then, I should think! Thanks!

  • Mart Says:

Hi Paul, comments elsewhere. I like to make you click: http://captaincomics.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=3370054%3ABlogPost%3A6392&page=1

  • Paul Cornell Says:

    Thanks for that lovely review.

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

    Hi Paul,

Actually that Email was with regards to the Marvel edition of book, which came out 10th June.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Oh, right! I must get a copy of that, so far I've just been sent the Panini.
