Captain Britain Plays Cricket
Here's two pages of lovely Adrian Alphona art from the upcoming Captain Britain and MI-13 annual, with colours by Christina Strain.

That's Brian Braddock at the wicket, with Spitfire keeping wicket, and O bringing out the weak lemon drink. One lovely detail added by Adrian is that Blade couldn't find the proper top, so (I think) is playing in a baseball shirt. I'm just hugely flattered that these guys put the effort in to make the game look so spot on. I hope you're enjoying the latest issue, and the first issue of Dark Reign: Young Avengers, both in your local comic shop today, if you're in the UK, and for which this blog, as always, will serve as letters page. Until next time, Cheerio.

The outfield needs a trim.
NICE preview!! Full of character, they are. At first I thought the blonde was Meggan, but I should've known better. No widow's peak. :(
Is O a Hobby Lion then?
I absolutely love Cap Thursdays. This issue, was too incredible for words. This is always my favorite book, and #13 was no different. Thanks so much for making my reading experience so great. I'm a bit distraught over what just happened, it was so intense. I really hope Wisdom makes it through! He's my favorite! The part with Faiza was so powerful...
Re Cap #13: Bloody Hell!
I might think of a more reasoned response later. But I probably won't.
Well Mr. Cornell I hope you're happy that I hold you in such high regard that I'm you are one of two people I'm willing to shell out an outrageous $3.99 an issue for 22 pages(the other being Mike Deodato and his art, my wallet wishes they'd get someone else on dark avengers).
Captain Britain - Loved it, especially Osborns cameo and Wisdom reaction to it, but sorry to say I shed no tears. Truth be told they would of been my first guess for someone to die in the team.
Young Avengers - I'll admit I never read any of YA Presents despite being a huge fan of the original 12 issue run which was hands down one of the biggest surprises in comic book history but I saw your name when I found this in my pull box and thought I'd give it a shot. I found it very interesting, some very nice moments but I still have so many questions about this new team, course I'll be back for next issue to get the answers so you're clearly doing your job.
So I read Captain Britain & MI13, today. And I reached the end of the issue. And I actually exclaimed a loud "Whoa!" of shock.
Now THAT's a cliffhanger!
Great issue, Paul. It's rare that the phrase "This issue changes everything" actually means that in comics these days. But here? How can it not?
No.
This is not happening, Paul. You haven't done what it looks like you've done. You haven't killed off my favourite member of my favourite team.
There's more to it. There has to be.
There'd better be...
The artwork is great. I love Alphona's art and Strain's colours and try to follow them both, so having them on a Captain Britain book is just going to be a triple delight.
Haven't read Dark Reign: Young Avengers yet, but Captain Britain #13 was amazing. Thank you for having that great interaction between Joey and Blade. I love Union Jack. Hope to see him as part of the resistance next month.
Love Captain Britain and now Dark Young Avengers.I came across your through Dr Who to your novel and last year your comics. Now I am trying to get my friends to do the same.
This issue may change everything, but that doesn't mean that everything we've seen will stick. There's enough magic doing the rounds to make sure that things can be undone as simply as pressing Ctrl+z.
The international non-reaction to a vampire invasion of Br€itain seems a little hard to swallow, but the story probably works better if you just ignore that. While guest-stars and crossovers aren't unwelcome, it's probably best to let the books characters establish themselves and the team's dynamic before indulging in things like that. Whatever about Osborn and Doom, it's hard to see France or Germany tolerating a bloody vampire nation as a neighbour.
Overall, I loved it. And, am I ever looking forward to Adrian's art! I think his wiki states he's given up on comics. Glad to see that's not the case!
Oh, and since I don't think I've said it elsewhere, great to hear that you're on Wildcards!
The colouring in those pages is really pretty. You can almost feel the sunshine. Great stuff!
I'm surprised this issue didn't wear a "Dark Reign" banner. Two nice tie-ins to two other titles, plus a small nod to Union Jack:London Falling. Well played, sir.
This issue was even more gripping than the last. I've got no clue where this book is going, now. How can I wait a whole month for the next installment?
Young Avengers was great. Nothing beats melting down a little old lady.
Awesome.
Thank you very much, all. It's lovely to get such a big positive reaction to two different comics on the same day. Adrian and Christina, by the way, haven't finished with these two pages, so regard this as work in progress. Binge: it does, but it's a scratch pitch made on a lawn. Dead: he is a curious orange. Jon: answers forthcoming over the whole run. Sean: all new readers graciously accepted. Niall: there is a big barrier around the UK... and I'd just like to point out that Mecha's comments refer to the current issue of DR: YA, and not to events in his or her own life.
CB & MI-13 - fabulous - my favourite ongoing series (and, incidentally, the best thing Marvel has put out for 20 years) My one complaint - the death of my favourite character, John the Skrull. Why must the good die young?
The black dog is, as I'm sure you know, a common downside of creativity, not that knowing that helps much. Well, maybe it does help a little to know you're not alone. Sunshine and trees definitely do help though.
Well, for a scratch pitch made on a lawn, it looks like Lord's!:)
Paul "don't get attached" Cornell strikes again. I am going to miss the Black Knight. You got him is Ebony Blade back, things were moving along with Faiza, and his armor was awesome. Oh well, see you next month, same bat time, same bat channel.
Thanks, all. Philip: well, not that young! Not in Skrull years.
Great to see some Adrian Alphona art- I always love the little details he throws in like Blade having the baseball tshirt on.
Whilst I've never been a cricket fan (we tend to ignore it in Scotland) its nice to see them having a game- like the old x-men baseball games.
Cap 13: Well, I was reading someones review on a forum and their words summed it up for me: "Holy ****".
Very good issue. Some shocking carnage, I'm not sure if were going to see a magical "reset" button pulled here; although I think i'd almost welcome it!
The parliament scene was shocking, and well executed- I think i've become numbed to large splash scenes of badguys attacking New York; or maybe its because it was closer to home- but the panel had a real impact to it.
Loved the little Dark Reign continuity nods- Dracula wondering why the "scarlet witch" hadn't pierced his barrier, if only he knew the deal he made with Doom would benefit him in so many ways....
The annual looks wonderful!
Cap Britain is the only Marvel title I pick up these days, such a fun read.
Thanks, you two.
Issue 13 was just fantastic.. with the Skrulls attacking and now hundreds of Vampires im surprised there are any of us regular ppl left.. must be down to our Keep Calm and Carry On attitude. lol
I loved how you included every aspect of this attack and gave good clear reasoning why England and its heroes have to face this alone, covering every angle.
I'd like to think in all the vampire battles the peripheral of British heroes are facing off against the unending armies of Dracula. (Sid breaking out of his cell, getting his shield, seeking redemption by protecting the staff of MI:13, possibly)
I hope all the fallen heroes "get better" soon!
Looks brilliant Paul.
Mind you, isn't Brian holding the bat backwards, with the spine facing out.
Love Blade in his baseball outfit because he couldn't find any whites.
I caught the bat being backwards as well.Oh well it was a pretty good effort otherwise.
Also Paul, your writing and your Marvel english compatriots have kept this kiwi boy to stick with Marvel and comics in general. We'll done sir and good luck with the Aussies in the Ashes (you'll need it!)
My gods Paul but you are a ruthless son of an expletive! Just when I think its not possible to shock this jaded comic veteran you do so and so brutally brilliant!
Loved the Wisdom comment on his Osborn conversation and the Union Jack/Blade altercation. The fact that some of these characters arent very well known means that their mortality is often more of an issue than the A-listers and this instalment proved that! (And that last page??? Well, its one way to deal with the MPs expenses scandal)
Looking forward to the annual and next issues cover is superb, the very mention of 'Resistance' has me salivating at the prospect of some old faces.
Havent been this excited about a comic since Death's Head appeared in Doctor Who Magazine!
Cheers
Darren
Thanks, all. The art team have been kind enough to say they'll fix that bat angle, though I think Brian may just have been rehearsing a sweep. And I think we stand rather a good chance in the Ashes.
Aaaargh, I believed that cheap little Asgardian wannabe!

As for Cap and MI13 (more Brian, please, wonderful cover though) I'm with Anon - I bet those MPs claim for coffins. Will they be in recess for three days then? God help the UK if Parliament is forced to fill the sudden gaps in the benches with Scotland's rubbish MSPs . . . they'd slap a Saltire on Bri and no mistake.
Now, this is a teeny matter going back to Cap weekly in the Seventies, but would someone please tell Marvel US that the Queen is a real person, and can therefore have a likeness.
Keep up the fab work.
I wouldn't believe anything she says!
