Dublin This Weekend

I'm honoured to be Guest of Honour this weekend at the sixth Phoenix Convention in Dublin:

http://pcon.ie/

It's especially grand to be so honoured amongst so many old friends, many of whom have been GoH there themselves.  I'm going to strive to live up to their standard.  By sheer coincidence, Gail 'Never Fail' Simone (see, I remembered!) is signing at Forbidden Planet in the city on the Friday night, so I'm going to try to pop in and see her (depending on how fast I get through customs) before going over to the convention.  Apart from anything else, it'll be good to be back in one of my favourite cities.

Oh, and here's a new interview with me up at Den of Geek:

Which covers Doctor Who, Captain Britain and all.  I've very much looking forward to the weekend, and I hope to see some of you there.  Until then, Cheerio!

    Great interview.

A Captain Britain movie would be a toughie, I think. But it does pose a greater question - who would you cast in the title and supporting roles? There's a question!

My brother and I were both hooked on watching One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing, as kids. It was recorded off the TV on what eventually became a very warn 80s VHS tape. It's the brief John Laurie (Mr Frazer from Dad's Army) which gets me.

    Great movie!

  • Richard Says:

If they ever did a Captain Britain movie i think the plot should be Merlyn sending Sir Braddock to a reality to seed the greatest hero of the omniverse, and have the story be about how he backed Brian over Jamie with Jamie becoming jealous, especially considering he was born with powers inside him while he considers Brian nothing, and murders his parents. Brian becomes CB with help from Merlyn and the teachings from his father while Jamie raises into a position of power using his power (pretty much Jaspers' Warp but with Jamie.. so Jamie's Warp) Anyway you throw Fury in there and have a sub plot with Betsy learning her powers and getting involved with Tom Lennox (nice to see him get remembered) other psy division ppls. Also include Slaymaster as one of Jamie's lackies wo kills of the psychics as they can see past his power.

Anyway at the end England is saved and the last seen involves Merlyn opening up rift and revealing a corps of Captain Britains.

    That movie would be awesome!

lol anyway noticed Captain Britain made an appearance in both Mighty and the Betsy one shot. He's having a busy week!

You were a great guest of honour, Paul, and hugely entertaining and funny all weekend. Your guest of honour interview was brilliant. I was amused when you mentioned how much you liked blogging and twitter, since I was twittering as much of the interview as I could keep up with.

Will you be going to P-Con next year? You mentioned you might have to cut down on the many cons you attend if they're not actually exposing you to a new audience. But you'll come back to us, won't you? *bats eyelids*

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Phew, I'll leave casting up to you lot! Richard: there we go, there's the plot. And yes, lots of Cap this week. And yes, I'll be back for PCon next year, all being well. Thanks!

  • Richard Says:

Well if you ever write the script Paul i want a mention in the credits :P

    lol

    as for casting

    Ben Barnes as Captain Britain
Toby Kebbell (with some longer hair) as Jamie
    Rupert Evans as Tom Lennox
    Emily Blunt as Betsy

I know they seem a little young but i think it could work.

As for Slaymaster (definitely needs a new name) i was thinking Jack Huston. But to be completely out their and change things up a bit maybe have Naveen Andrews.

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

Slaymaster definitely was Asian, and not exactly PC by today's standards. But yes, I agree that it's important he remains dead. His final fight incredibly important in both Cap and Psylocke's lives. For Brian because he actually killed the guy, and for Betsy because he bested her in combat and blinded her. Anybody who can remember back to the Acts of Vengeance story Claremont and Lee did for Psylocke back at the turn of the 90s, in Uncanny X-Men, knows just how much of a psychological scar that left on her.

(In fact, although a lot of Betsy's thoughts we an interweaving dreamscape in that first chapter, it's a really interesting glimpse at the Braddock siblings' relationships from her perspective.)

To bring Slaymaster properly back from the dead would dilute the impact of his death. That has kind of happened with The Fury and Jim Jaspers in more recent times, and I think I'd like to at least see one of Cap's former adversaries stay dead.

  • Richard Says:

    Agreed.

Having him come back recently in the Exiles (as an alternate reality version) was nice, and allowed Betsy to work through her issues (which she did in the one-shot this week) but as for the original, he should stay dead.

I wast sure if he was Asian or not, Naveen Andrews came to mind because mainly he's British and his character in LOST put me in the mind of Slaymaster. Though i thought it might be too much like type casting but i wouldnt mind seeing him using his British accent for the part.

Hey Sword, didnt i read that you did some acting. Maybe you could play Kevin Mulhearn (a.k.a. Doctor Destiny) if you dont mind Slaymaster killing you in the middle of your magic act lol!

And Paul i hope you have a go with The Fury at some point, maybe you can bring back some of the Alan Moore magic.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I wouldn't rule out the Fury, but that doesn't mean I have solid plans.

  • funnyerik9 Says:

You know Paul, when I first met you at Galley all those years ago you weren't nearly at the level you are now. Now look at you. You're an inspiration. Truly.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Very kind of you. Hard to tell from over here!
