Young Avengers: Dark Reign

Hello from New York! It is offensively cold, particularly at East-West crosswalks, but otherwise this continues to be one of my favourite cities. Day one of the Comic Convention was extraordinary. It was particularly cool to have Chris Claremont wander up to the signing and say hello. Good to catch up with Peter David, Mike Carey, Leonard, Diggle, Jon Hickman, et al. The Marvel party was, as always, rocking. I popped up on my first Marvel panel: row of creators; packed room; really enthusiatic audience, and was plonked next to Frank Tieri by Joe Q, on the basis that Frank was the most Brooklyn person he knew, and the two of us together would be like some sort of matter/antimatter reaction. (Joe thinks I'm very English, and if this is my niche then so be it.) Amongst all sorts of pleasing announcements concerning my friends and colleagues, Tom B let it be known that I'll be writing Dark Reign: Young Avengers, with Mark Brooks, who drew my issue of Young Avengers Presents (and having met him yesterday is a lovely chap) on art. This is a bit of a dream project for me. It's basically the Young Avengers running head on into a new group of, well, are they heroes or not? At any rate, they've stolen the Young Avengers' name. Our heroes are put in the same place as the original Avengers were put when they themselves appeared, how do they react to these new kids who don't really know what they're doing: fight; mentor; feel attracted to? How about varying degrees of all three? Here's Mark's cover for the first issue, and his character designs (I'll talk more about who each of these guys are nearer the time, and there'll be several interviews up over the next few days), both of which, I hope you agree, are awesome. Do find me if you can, meetings today, until tomorrow, Cheerio!

Wow! Oh man I really can't wait to read this. I love Young Avengers and your comic work is always fantastic. This new team looks awesome, the Young Masters of Evil maybe?
Also it's really nice to see some more female characters showing up. I wish we had more events like this here in England.

  • drettworlb Says:

Whoa! That cover rocks! Great news. I look forward to hearing about more developments.

  • Matt Ampersand Says:

I must say, Mark Brooks' art seems to have gotten a lot better. Those two pieces look great.

And looking forward to reading this, sounds very interesting.

  • Mark Clapham Says:

Sounds like a great use of the Dark Reign set-up, and more YA is always welcome. Will be very interested to see how you work around 'Mighty Avengers' (or if - you might decide to just not use those characters).

  • IslandLiberal Says:

Your issue of Young Avengers Presents was tied with Fraction's for the best of the bunch; those two really felt like the main series in its prime. Very much looking forward to it.

  • Chris Says:

I know virtualy zilch about the Young Avengers, (I cant keep track of Avengers groups these days New, Dark, Big and Mighty).

But given your work on Cap and Wisdom.. It's on the list :)

P.S Belated thanks to those offering Black Knight background info following my last comment. I've put it to good use and I'm slowly catching up on some past stories. Cheers

  • Greg Says:

Goodness gracious, where were you guys at the NYCC? I couldn't find neither you or Kirk! I so needed to thank you both for the great Blade in the MI:13 and to get autographs. :(

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

I've always been a big fan of Mark Brooks. I always thought he was moved off New X-Men far too soon, and his style is a good match for the tone of Young Avengers in general. I'm looking forward to this a lot. It's great to have Young Avengers very much alive and telling stories.

  • Niall Says:

These Dark Young Avengers sound slightly Runawaysish.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks, all. 'Got better'? Hmm. No, don't tell me what you mean. Mark: I just take it that those two have the time to do both, though we will of course mention the situation. Greg: I'm back in the hall today, but sorry, just wandering about. I'll sign anything if you can find me! Leonard, however, has a table in artists' alley, so he can be tracked down. Niall: yes, I'm riffing on both teams, in as much as they're the images of young heroes in the Marvel Universe.

  • Greg Says:

Darn it! I won't be attending today. :(

    Maybe next year then.

  • Niall Says:

Cool! It'd be nice if these guys turned up in Runaways. I was kinda hoping you'd be announced as the new writer on that title anyway, but for now this should be more than enough goodness!

  • Rocko Jerome Says:

Wish I was there, man. I'd come by and enthusiastically babble at you for as long as I was allowed to.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

    Thanks, all.

  • drnoh Says:

    Dear Paul;

It's wonderful that you're having such a great time in NYC! I'm sad I couldn't meet you in the NYCC, but I met Leonard Kirk. His art is so awesome without colors. What a combination of your work and his. Faiza's armor looks excellent! What an experience NYCC was! Take care.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I'm glad you got to meet Leonard, and yes, I took a look through his portfolio too, excellent stuff.

  • OLIVER Says:

    Hi Paul,

    I'm looking forward to YA...

What a strange coincidence, I just finished the Dr. Who 2-parter you wrote for season 3 a few hours ago. I didn't know you were the same guy! I must admit, I got a bit teary-eyed by the end. Good stuff!

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks very much, that's what we're after!

  • Diego Antonio Says:

Hi, Im Worry, What's happeng whit Wiccan, Speed, Hulkling and the others??? they will be in Mighty Avengers?? our What??
    I hope u anwser me!

  • Max Says:

I'm not sure if I am officially the first person to post regarding DARK REIGN: YOUNG AVENGERS or not, but if I am I feel special as this would also be the first time I've responded to any blog posting anywhere on the internets (I use an 'S' cause the goverment said theres two of them - laughs). I very, very much enjoyed the first issue of the Young Avengers. I like all the new YOUNG MASTERs, and I especially love the new Melter. I hope that he doesn't get his face melted or anything like that as the series goes on. I run a small roleplay website dedicated to Marvel (www.xpg.us), I hope it's ok to mention that?) and we're all digging the series over there! It's really great and I can't wait for the second issue to hit the stands.
    Great work!

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Diego: well, they'll be in this comic. Max: thanks very much!

  • Robert Says:

I just got this book from the library and read it all in one sitting. Just spectacular! Awesome story! fascinating new characters! Mind-blowing art!
Hulkling and Wiccan are my favorite characters and I love the way they were done here. I also hope to see more of the Dark Young Avengers/Young Masters of Evil. This booking is why is still read superhero comics at 41.
I even had to gush about it on Amazon.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks very much. The Young Masters will be popping up in a short story I've written for the Age of Heroes mini. Ta for the Amazon review!
