Cap Sells Out Again, NYCC, Interview, Radio 4 Forms Up
I'm very pleased to hear, from my editor at Panini, that the collected edition of the first four issues of Captain Britain and MI-13: Secret Invasion, has already sold out and will shortly be going to a second printing. It seems we're currently at number five in the UK graphic novel sales charts! I'm thoroughly chuffed.
The first of those interviews about Cap that I mentioned is now up, at Comic Book Resources:

And I’ve been told my schedule for the New York Comic Convention. I’ll be doing a signing at the Marvel booth from noon until 1pm on the Friday, and that same day, from 4.45pm, I’ll be part of Marvel’s Dark Reign panel. Which is also very pleasing.
And finally, on a different subject, the Radio 4 science fiction season of which my adaptation of Iain Banks’ ‘The State of the Art’ is part is forming up, including plays by Kim Newman, and my old Circular Time co-writer Mike Maddox, who’s got Derek Jacobi in his!

It is indeed all rather lovely at the moment. Hope to see some of you in New York! Cheerio!

The Panini sellout is great news. I wonder how many of those copies were purchased by US fans trying to get the trade a couple of months earlier than Marvel's own collection?
Kudos to Panini. They've been doing a lot of good collections of late.
Paul, out of curiosity, does your inclusion on that Dark Reign panel infer that Vampire State is going to officially be part of Dark Reign?
Great stuff. Nice to see it's doing so well. Are the regular issues still selling out?
That cover for #11 is iconic.
Hopefully the Annual is a definite.
So one of the surprises of this series for me is the Black Knight. My previous experiences of the guy have been
A) as a living statue in an old Avengers I picked up as a kid. (I think Jarvis was using him as umbrella stand)
B) a few sporadic appearances in other comics where he was always using that kind of "Thor-speak" that verily vexes me so.
So when did he get, ya know, cool? Is this all your doing? Can anyone recommend any catch up material for Dane and the Ebony Blade.
cheers
Chris,
For the original Black Knight and Ebony Blade background, try Mystic Arcana Black Knight. It's worth it just for Marko's cover. The Dane Whitman Black Knight has been around since I think 1970 and has been used on and off in various books. I don't know of any collections but you can try this link for more info:

I really got back into comics because of the Frank Tieri's BK story in New Excalibur and of course, Paul's inclusion of him in MI:13 which keeps me glued month after month.
Sword: no, that's not what the panel's about. The Panini trade is lovely, good paper stock, intro, etc.. Govikes has just about answered that for you, Chris. (And no, we don't sell out issues these days, because the print run now anticipates sales.) I don't remember Dane doing the doths and dosts, but like you, I first met him as a statue!
I believe Dane went through the 'Thor-speak' phase just after Namor killed his wife Marrina with the Ebony Blade. His archaic phrasing was part of his transformation into a being of metal as a side effect of the now re-awakened blood curse. It happened in the late 200s of Avengers, under the pen of Walt Simonson. Hope this is helpful!
(...and wow, just read that back to myself- NERD ALERT!)
Hey Paul, got your answers via Denise! They were very illuminating, and I'm sure the readers will get a lot out of them. I know I did. Thing is... I'm writing a companion biography to go with the question, to fill readers in on the subject of the "Ten Minutes With", and I can't find very much info... like... did you study at uni, if so what... to fill in the gaps in between somewhat listing all your writing achievements, which are many!
Eleanor,
x.
Mr. Cornell,
Love MI:13. I started a fan group for the comic on Facebook.
I was wondering, though - all the members are English. No Scots, no Welsh, nobody from Northern Ireland. Yes, Captain Britain represents all of the UK, but he's still English.
This thought wasn't entirely random. It occurred to me while doing an interview with a professor from Queen's University Belfast about American perceptions of Northern Ireland - after having studied "The Troubles" in a class at the University of Pittsburgh.
So I guess I'm saying that it would be nice to see just a bit more diversity in the group. Cheers.
I disagree with Spekkio. I mean, it's important to have diversity in the book but I don't think a team should be specifically picked because of where they're from. I'm a northerner and none of us are in the book either (well, there was Captain Midlands, but he was a midlander). But we've got two Americans and used to have a Skrull and a fairy.
Oddly enough, it wasn't so long ago that I was disputing the cast of the Mighty Avengers with some fellow comic fans. It's the word "diversity" that gets under my skin when it comes to superheroes because it's the assumption that "diverse" boils down to skin colour, which just isn't true.
I remember the original Black Knight (Sir Percy) as well as the Masters of Evil Black Knight (Dane's uncle).
Thanks, Alex. Eleanor: I'll send Denise a few details. Spekkio: I do see what you mean. They haven't really been picked as a representative team, though. When we went through a 'big team' version in the pitch stages, we included the new Welsh Dragon, and I do have an idea for a Scottish hero (whose identity wouldn't be nationality-based, that is he wouldn't be 'The Scotsman'!) who might show up one day. In Wisdom, of course, Maureen was from Ulster. Stephen: I think I probably disagree with you, though I can't be certain. Mark: me too!
Message from a spanish fanatic: Oh, please, don't turn the armor for black knight, the leather jacket for ever!!
Technically doesn't Alistaire Stuart have Scottish roots? Him and his late sister. That was why when her alternate universe counterpart turned up, during Chris Claremont's Fantastic Four run, she was called Caledonia.
Anon: thanks very much (and how things have changed!) He'll change as apt, don't worry. Sword: that helps a bit, ta.
Really love this series Paul, congratulations and continued success with it.
Cap has punctuated my comic reading from day one - I started with comics just as the character launched in 76/77, my comic reading died out soon after Alan Moore left the title around 1985, and here I am many years later (after coming back to comics in 2000), digging CB all over again.
Will be ordering the Wisdom trade to catch up on what I've obviously missed!
Hope to be reading many more Paul Cornell-authored comics in the years to come.
Dear Paul;
Thank you for the information on NYCC. And with each issue, I greatly enjoy CB & MI:13 even more. Will the upcoming Dracula storyline show us all why Blade's heart's desire was never shown in prior issues? I look forward to seeing how you write Dr. Doom and Dracula as a team.
Paul I can't wait to see you at the con, I actually write for comicrelated.com and we'd love to get an interview with you at some point in the weekend over the MI13, I actually gave it the best new series of the year.
See you at the con sir!
Thanks very much, Rick, that's what we like to hear. Dr: actually, I just assumed that Blade's heart's desire was obvious: to rid the world of vampires. Maybe I should have shown it. Eric: sure, find me in New York!
By the way Paul: the ending of last months Captain Britain--
Dracula? On the Moon you say? Best ending to a Marvel comic I've seen in years old boy.
Thanks very much. It continues in that vein next issue, but with added Dr. Doom.
About Captain Britain and MI-13: Secret Invasion - Paul, how are you? I am from Brasil and now a great fan of you!
Congratulations for bring Captain Britain in great style and for the success! I always like his stories and also the character. I just have read the four first issues and I loved it. Action, great dialogues, a great art, a great writer! The dinamic is marvelous.
And you also bring Black Knight, too. Great! They are fantastic, CB and BK!!! Now, I am waiting for Meggan... Will she come back???
I hope can read the others numbers.
Til number 100!!!
All the best for you,
CapAle
Thanks very much, CapAle, glad to hear we have a Brazilian following. As for Meggan: there will be some good news soon. Cheers.
