12 Blogs 9: Quiz!

Today: a quiz!  Below are some (pretty hard, I think, some verging on the impossible), questions, drawn from the sort of nonsense familiar to those who hang out around here.  (There’s even a bit about Faringdon’s music scene.  Hard it is, yes!)  Research is required, and a bit of lateral thinking, and sometimes intuition.  Sorry it seems to be so about me, but one of the difficulties of writing this quiz was that if I could find an answer on the internet, so could you, so I had to rely on my own experience quite a bit.  (Though the internet will help in several cases.)  Once you’ve got your answers together, post them in the comments section of this particular blog entry (not any of the others in the Twelve Days).  Yes, that means other people can see your answers, so you’d better be sure about them, or alternatively, you could post a few red herrings, and check out what the wisdom of crowds is working towards.  Considering how hard this is, it might well be worth plonking up a couple of correct answers early and seeing if that suffices.  The first person to post a complete set of correct answers on the Blogger version of the blog, and the first person to do so on the Live Journal version will both receive a nice prize bundle, and the adulation of their peers.  If nobody gets there, the contestant on each version with the highest number of correct answers at the stroke of midnight on January 1st (yes, the end of the first day of the year, I’m going to be busy on New Year’s Eve) will win.  My decision is final, about all things.  (I so rarely get to say that.)  Answers containing abuse towards anyone (hey, it might happen) don’t get printed, and are disqualified.  Apart from it’s okay to yell at me for setting this thing.  Here we go!

1: Why might the Doctor and the Red Skull be mistaken for each other?

2: Which two British comedy shows are referenced in Captain Midlands’ real name, including his nickname?

3: In which Doctor Who story can we reasonably assume that a companion (the character, not the actor) has vomited?

4: What is true of myself, Rob Shearman, Toby Whithouse, Steven Moffat and nobody else?

5: In which SF movie of the 1970s is Gillian Anderson mentioned?

6: Which TV show I’d worked on was my local MP most keen to ask me about when we met this summer (one point) and why (another point)? (You can take a good shot at this without insider knowledge.)

7: What’s the full name of the bassist in Stafford, Wright and Reynolds? (I just mean first name and surname, not any middle names.  Phew, let you off there!)

8: At the Cult TV convention, I once found myself privileged to be at dinner with a British comedian/presenter and a German SF TV star, the former of which was trying to find out from the latter if she’d heard a hit single he’d featured on.  Who were these two thoroughly charming folk?

9: One of the most fun, and hard to believe, Fortean stories of recent years was that of a secret exchange programme between Earth and an alien planet.  What’s the name of that planet meant to be?

10: Which pop act does Bernice Summerfield think dominated the musical culture of 20th century Earth?

11: In the world of Mushishi, how can you be literally reborn?

12: Under a pseudonym, I once wrote one of a series of astrology-themed children’s novels. Which sign of the zodiac was my book about?

13: What stupid mistake did I make in the piece on ‘The Sensorites’ in The Discontinuity Guide?

14: A broadsheet newspaper once printed an April Fool story concerning a Doctor Who related album that Kate Bush was about to release.  What was the album meant to be called?

15: What was the first Marvel comic that Ron from I,Fanboy ever read?

16: What’s the connection between James Hadley Chase and Murray Smith?

17: Who is the oldest living, credited on screen, writer of televised Doctor Who?

18: ‘Oideyasu’ would be a greeting you would hear in shops in which city?

19: Who’s next in this list, which dates back to 1940 and continues to the present day?  Joseph, Stanley, Vincent (acting), Stanley again, Roy, Leonard, Marvin, Gerry, Archie, James, Thomas, nobody, Robert...

20: In which Doctor Who story, not in the medium of television, would you find mention of the Ordinand System?

Good luck, everyone!

Scale Guy is away.  This far away.

Aaaaw!! Question number 8 brings back such mixed emotions and memories! (And it's the only question I instantly knew the answer to as I scanned through the post!)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Well, your strategy may vary, but it could be an idea to tell us.

  • Lizzie Says:

    3. Mickey, at the end of "Rose."

  • Lizzie Says:

No WAIT I'm wrong. Though the answer's still probably Mickey.

Also the captcha wants me to type an umlaut and I definitely don't know how to type an umlaut.

  • A-M Says:

Oh I didn't realise you wanted us to answer the questions publicly, but in that case, it's Mr Bill Oddie and Ms Xenia Seeburg (great girl, drinks pints!)
She hadn't heard of the Funky Gibbon had she?

That was my first foray into TV events, that weekend has a lot to answer for!

(Of course if I'm completely wrong, I look a right tit now!)

  • PG Says:

#2 = "Round the Horne" and "Dad's Army"

    #20 = "Seasons of Fear"

That's All I have so far!

  • PG Says:

... and I would highly caution anyone against Googling '"doctor who"+vomit'. You may be disturbed by the results.

  • Rachel Says:

I have absolutely no idea. But my first thought for 2 was Midland's Today, but I'm pretty sure they do not intend to be a comedy show.

But then I looked it up and this one does have an answer easily found on the web. So it's Round the Horne and Dad's Army

  • Rikki Says:

Eeep. I'm helped on a few of these because A)I'm a loyal viewer/listener of Ifanboy and read a lot of comics and B) Have no life and access to the internet.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

It's really hard to leave a response without confirming or denying. So: you're all doing very well!

  • Lizzie Says:

Oh! Adam, in The Long Game! Duh.

There you go, kids. Y'all can take the hard ones.

  • PG Says:

In addition to those I posted above, here are a few more answers to ponder publicly, I suppose:

#1 - Both have used the pseudonym "John Smith"
    #7 - Steve Wright
    #9 - "SERPO"
    #14 - "An Unearthly child"
    #17 - David Fisher
    #18 - Tokyo

If someone else is smart enough to fill in the rest, they deserve the prize!

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Now, you see, this is the idea, to collect answers you think are true, by nicking them from other people. If a few of the above are correct, PG is doing well here.

  • Dozeymagz Says:

Hmmm - tough questions.... If I just answer '42' to all of them - am I in with a chance?

  • PG Says:

Been struggling with #4 tonight. The best I can come up with is that all 4 have created series before writing for Doctor Who. My problem is that as far as I can tell, Rob did not create a TV series, but a series of radio plays. Any ideas out there?

  • John Toon Says:

    13. You rewatched "The Sensorites". That was your mistake - it was also your punishment.

  • Stuart Ian Burns Says:

#5 is Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's during the scene when Neary is building the clay hill in his front room. On the tv there's a film (title?) where a postman says "There's a package here, a package for Gillian Anderson."

It's something I won't forget because I remember drunkenly calling Radio 5 just after midnight in the late 90s to tell a phone in audience and was called a geek by I think it was Peter Allen and his guests.

  • PG Says:

    @Stuart Ian Burns:

Yes, I knew I had heard that name in an unexpected place recently! #5 was bothering me, since I had just heard it, but couldn't remember. They've been airing Close Encounters a lot this holiday season.
