12 Blogs 10: Paul and Mike do Captain Britain

I always try and plonk some exclusive Marvel artwork on the blog around Christmas, and here's something my kindly editor Nick Lowe allowed me to show you in advance.  It's a page from the forthcoming issue nine, the end of 'Hell Comes to Birmingham', and I think you'll agree it features a lovely Meggan.  The big news is: it's by Mike Collins.  Mike's a friend of the blog, a Doctor Who comic strip artist who illustrated my broadsheet Who story last year.  The competition my agent Simon came up with, centering around that story, resulted in Laurie Pink starting her 'Paul and Mike' series of cartoons, with which regular readers may be familiar (those are Paul and Mike on my wall in the room photos).  Don't fret, the esteemed Leonard Kirk isn't going anywhere.  He's drawn most of the issue (and is now well into the next one, and just wait until you see his Dracula), Mike is just filling in on a few pages.  But isn't it a lovely job?

Speaking of friends of the blog, urban fantasy author of repute C.E. Murphy tells me she's just got her own comic series, Chance, off the ground with the Dabel Brothers, and this being a labour of love for her, she's going to give some of the proceeds to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The first issue is out almost immediately, and you can see a preview, with some lovely Ardian Syaf artwork, here:

I must say, I've thoroughly enjoyed, this year, the discipline and creativity of writing a new issue of Cap every four weeks, working in a small, determined, and demented team, in the form of Nick and Leonard.  It's one of the joys of my life, I think they rather enjoy it too, and I hope that enjoyment communicates itself to you at home.  Long may it continue.

Scale Guy is on holiday.  In Micronesia.

See you tomorrow!  Ho ho ho!  Cheerio!

Thank you very much for sharing this. I've always had a certain fondness for Meggan so it pleases me to see this (on this front, I take anything I can get).

I've been a fan of C.E. Murphy for a while now, so I'll definitely check out the comic.

    Hi Paul,

Wow. That Mike Collins page looks great. And he does do a particularly pleasing Meggan. I look forward to seeing the full issue in the New Year. I don't think any of us mind a few pages of fill in if the pages look good.

As for the enjoyment you guys are having? It certainly does show to us. It's the little details - like a stuffed and mounted Lockheed, actually explaining Alistaire Stuart's shifting appearance, or Nick Lowe suggesting Meggan to be added to the hand of the Ape Variant cover. Those little details that make the book well worth a second reading.

The book remains a genuinely fun title to read. Thanks for that.

Any chance we can get you to write a Blade ongoing?

  • RAB Says:

Agreed with everything Mark Roberts just said.

Also, in case any fans are feeling the pain of Scale Guy withdrawal -- and in the spirit of expressing my enjoyment of your work -- I've taken you at your word and posted my Scale Guy fanfic here. I hope others will step forward and pay tribute to this most underappreciated of heroes however they see fit.

    How about Black Knight?

    Artwork of Meggan looks great.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thank you, all. I think at the moment there's only room for one ongoing in my life (though there will be miniseries news in the New Year, not about Blade or Dane, though). RAB: amazing stuff, thank you! I'll make sure Leonard sees that.

  • Juan Luis Says:

I would like to see Paul Cornell and Alan Davis working together in Excalibur. It would be a extraordinary team. Meggan looks excellent in the last frame. Greetings from Spain. Juan Luis Alegre.

Brilliant artwork. Loving these books. Everytime I finish an issue I sigh, because its done until the next time.

Wouldn't it fun to see a cross over with Doctor Who and Captain Britain.

May even be fun to have Captain Midlands partner the Doctor for awhile. That could be fun given the Doctors stance on guns.

  • Stephen Says:

Phenomenal stuff Paul, just what I've been waiting for. Mike Collins is a great artist and if, God forbid, Leonard were to ever leave the title, I now know who my first choice would be.

And I loved RAB's Scale Guy fanfic. Great stuff. Scale Guy: best new character of 2008, no question!

  • RAB Says:

Oops, I'd specifically meant to thank Stephen in my fanfic post and neglected to do so owing to a lack of brain function. I've corrected that in the comments on my blog.

And Paul, just my luck that no sooner I post this than you go and remind everyone what real writing looks like...

Thanks, all. I'd love to work with Alan, but look how busy he is right now. And I doubt we'll see a Who/Cap crossover, sorry!
