Wish Me Luck
So tomorrow we're off to Denver for the World Science Fiction Convention, and it's the Hugo Awards ceremony on Saturday night. Thanks to everyone who's supported 'Human Nature'. I'll let you know how it goes. We're on holiday for a week afterwards, and I'm looking forward to the time off.
Captain Britain and MI-13 issue 4 is due to come out on Wednesday 13th: as always, this blog will serve as the letters page, so let me know what you think.
But before I go...
Just did an interview with the ladies from Comic Racks podcast, available here, where we talk about Cap, Who and the FF:
http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2//index.php?showtopic=138254&pid=951294&st=0&#entry951294
My mate Ian Potter deserves a few more listeners for his excellent BBC radio comedy show No Tomatoes. Do pop over and give it a listen, for it is full of fannish glee:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/listenagain/sunday/rams/2315.ram
And I was very pleased to be a sent, by the author Joel Meadows, a copy of Studio Space, Tripwire magazine's generously-illustrated book that interviews comic artists at length and looks at their work environments, with many luscious examples of their art. I'm pleased to have plonked a blurb line onto their next edition. Do give it the once over.
I've lost one panel at Worldcon, the post apocalyptic one, so that's a bit less homework for me. Phew. I think that's everything I had to do before I went sorted out. I'm bound to have forgotten something. If you see me in Denver, do say hello, otherwise, until then, Cheerio.

Good luck. :)
What she said :)
Please title your next entry, "Things To Do In Denver When You're Deadlined"... go on.
Paul,
First, the bad news: We've been experiencing something of a heat wave in Denver. 23 consecutive days of high temperatures above 90 degrees has broken a record first set in 1874. Now for the good news: The forecast has rain arriving by Wednesday too cool things down. Our summer rains are curious events: they blow in around 2:00 PM, drop buckets of rain, and blow out again in about a half hour.
Now, remember, the rains notwithstanding, we have a pretty dry climate here, and you will be at altitude. If you aren't used to it, don't over-extend yourself. Drink plenty of water, and don't go trying to run up any flights of stairs.
If you are planning to do some touring around Colorado after the convention, you must go up to the mountains. Pay a visit to Breckenridge, off I-70 about an hour and a half west of Denver. Walk around the town, stop in at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company for lunch, and imagine this picturesque town in the middle of winter- covered in feet of snow with skiers happily wandering around. And then, with your excellent imagination, add some Yeti to the scene. Terror ensues, and a certain Time Lord must save the day. (If you get the sense I'm trying to plant the seeds of an idea you can pitch to Upper Boat for a story that would involve a Colorado location shoot, you're absolutely right, and I make no apologies for this shameless promotion.)
You should also head to Manitou Springs, just a little west of Colorado Springs, and catch the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak. The view from the top (14,110 feet above sea level) is truly stunning.
There's some very nice scenery to be had at the Royal Gorge Bridge just outside Canon City, or you could try your hand at White Water Rafting (at this point in the summer, the rapids are fairly tame.)
Most of all, I do hope you'll enjoy your travels around Colorado. I'd just suggest that you may want to plan your itinerary to be well away from Denver the last week of August (it seems there's another convention coming to town which promises LOTS of inconvenience for everyone.)
Safe trip, and good luck next Saturday!
-Patrick M.
Loads of luck!!
Side note - you going to World Fantasy? I just registered. :)
Best of luck, Paul! "Human Nature" is by far my favorite Doctor Who episode to date.
Thanks, all, especially for those tourist ideas, Patrick. I don't think I'm going to World Fantasy, but I may have a last minute urge and do so. Cheers.
"it's the Hugo Awards ceremony on Saturday night. Thanks to everyone who's supported 'Human Nature'. "
Just remember, when you can see that Hugo statuette up there on the rostrum, and you're staring at it thinking "any second now that could be mine..."
...Don't blink! =>:o>
Hey Paul. Good luck.
By the way, I'm the annoying Keith who submitted so many questions to the Comic Racks interview.
Bit late, but good luck and here's hoping the jetlag isn't too bad!
The best of luck, Paul. And I hope the heat is not too extreme, across the pond.
For those interested Comic Book Resources have 7 pages of preview up for Captain Britain & MI:13 #4.

I'm particularly fond of Page 5. I wonder why...? ;D
I'm definitely rooting for you to win this well-deserved major award. In the meantime, I should let you know that you've just one an extremely minor award, for this very blog. Good luck Saturday night, and say hi for me to fellow Hugo nominee John Scalzi if you happen to think of it.

Thanks all, and particularly Karen. I humbly accept your lovely award! And James will be pleased too, I'm sure. I was drinking with Scalzi last night: lovely chap. I shall make sure to say hello from you.
Well, Paul, I'm sorry you didn't get that vastly superior award, but "Blink" was pretty strong competition. Along with everything else, you're just going to have to write something amazing for the 2010 series!
You were robbed! Just kidding. Sorry to hear you lost out but how mainstream is DW/TW, when 3 out of the 5 nominees are Doctor Who stories?
Guess we know why SM wasn't at the awards, he was too busy building another shelf for all his awards.
Hope you are having a good time enjoying Denver and the Colorado Rockies
Sorry this one didn't materialize for you, Paul. Granted, Blink was pretty strong competition, but since Moff already won the last two years running they could've let you have this one.
Buck up, that rocketship'll be yours one of these days.
Hi Paul,
Sorry I missed you before you left. Been working on a story break down for a really cool comic book concept I have. On my third draft - not entirely sure if am ready to go to script yet. But its getting there.
Anyway I note that Mr Moffat won again. So sorry that you did not get the HUGO - would have loved for you to have done so.
However Moffats Blink story was always going to be a tough act to follow - even with your great Human Nature/Family Blood story - which finished up as my second favourite Doctor Who story of 2007. Sorry but Blink was just great lol.
That said I wasn't too keen on Moffats two part story this year.
I hope you do get that Hugo eventually though because to me your right up there with the Moff as one of my favourite TV writers - and your now one of my favorite comic book writers too.
Anyway enjoy the rest of your holiday - and I want photos if you find big foot. Better still write him into MI13 lol. Spitfire and Bigfoot hook up and fall deeply in love.
I saw Paul this morning at the Convention, and despite not winning for Human Nature, his spirits were quite high. And I should mention that the audience at the "Doctor, Doctor, Which Doctor Is The Best?" panel discussion was enthusiastic in it's support for Paul and his work on Doctor Who.
Paul was actually quite insightful on a number of things during that panel discussion. You could tell the audience was hanging on his every word. I have to believe we have not heard the last of Paul Cornell in Doctor Who, or in competition to get a Hugo.
Sorry you didn't win the Hugo, but look on the bright side. If you won, Fame would have gotten its hooks into you, and you'd become hooked on the celebrity lifestyle of fast cars, faster women, deafening nightclub music, and getting paid lots of money for your work. Then POW! a Paul Cornell up-skirt photo scandal all over the internet!
The world doesn't need that. ;)
Really it doesn't.
It's best you keep doing all the great work. :)
I was sorry to hear that you'd missed out. Blink was great, but for me Human Nature was utterly wonderful - easily my favourite DW story of 2007 and probably my favourite so far.
I hope you enjoy your holiday.
Dear Paul,
Just wondered if you'd be interested in seeing a script I'm working on. It's an extension on from Family of Blood. As I have not entered this genre before I have no idea where to head with it. Perhaps you may feel you can help.
Isaac
((HUGS))
Commiserations, Paul - lovely as it is to have another Who win, and good as Blink was, you should have won. Not because of Buggins' Turn, but because I believe Human Nature was a far better story.
Oh well... Good luck in writing the next one!
Thanks very much, all. I was glad that Steven won for Who once again, and really enjoyed the convention. That was a great Who panel. And sorry, Isaac, I don't do that! Loving Colorado, cheers all.
