Constellations, Comic Shop Openings and Stuff

Just popping in quickly to mention a few things that need urgently mentioning. I’m aware that my blog at the moment is really just a combination of promotion and social calendar, and I promise I’ll get to some more writerly writing soon. Notably a piece about New York. It’s just that life is busy at the moment and thinks keep popping up. I’m also aware that the blog design could do with a bit of modernisation. I will get there, it’s just that I’m so busy writing things. Here are the things I have to mention:

Notably, and most wonderfully, I’m nominated, alongside Moffat, in the Constellation Awards, Canada’s fan awards for excellence in science fiction television and film, in the category of Best Script. All Canadian citizens can vote, or those attending the Polaris conventions. Hmm, I know quite a few Canadians…

At 11.30am this Saturday, the 3rd May, I’ll be popping in for Free Comic Book Day to officially open Cheltenham’s new comic shop, Proud Lion:

http://www.proudlion.co.uk/

Comic Book Resources have put up six lovely full colour pages of art from the first issue of Captain Britain and MI-13, available May 14/May 15 in your local comic shop, depending on if you’re in the US or UK:

And here's a new interview about the series at Newsarama:

On Sunday, I’ll be on one of the teams, probably the Third Row Fandom team (unless I get a better offer), who won last time (I love it how SFX coming second is mentioned below!), at the Sci-Fi London Pub Quiz:

http://www.sci-fi-london.com/festival/2008/programme/event/pub-quiz.php

And I’m looking forward to one of the pivots around which my year turns, the Clarke Awards, tomorrow night, at which I always see so many friends. So I may see some of you on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. Until then, Cheerio!

  • chris burgess Says:

As much as I'd love to ballot stuff for the Constellation awards, paying $5 to cast a ballot is quite ridiculous. Sorry but this is one Canadian who won't be voting for anyone.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware of that. Obviously, I don't expect people to pay to vote for me. Now I regret putting the link up on that basis, but still feel that I should mention the honour of the nomination. What do you think would be a reasonable course of action for me here?

  • Argus Says:

Just dropped by to say I thoroughly enjoyed the interview on Newsarama regarding Captain Britain... you are obviously very enthused about the project which is very encouraging as a reader! I'm also excited about the cast. One desperate, lonely plea though: could you at some point *please* the address the limbo status of Meggan, aka Captain Britain's wife? She vanishes repairing some convuluted reality warp... and Captain Britain barely mentions her ever again!

Also, loved the Daddy or chips reference in the interview, I'm sure I was one of a minority of readers who got that. Hooray for British writers writing British characters! Hooray for nobody saying things like toodle-pip (I hope..)!

  • The Factory Says:

Sorry, this is nothing to do with the post but I just wanted to say that I just saw two Doctor Who Episodes that you wrote last year and absolutely loved them. Wondered if you were doing any episodes this year so I can look out for them (apols if you have and they've been on, but I'm a bit behind the times).

  • Ben Weldon Says:

Daddy or chips. LOL. You do realise about 3 people are going to get that reference. ;)

  • Ben Weldon Says:

Ha! and argus is the other one :D

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

Daddy and Chips? Brilliant!I'm sure there are several hundred American readers trying to work out what that means!

Two great interviews Paul. I particularly like the inference that Brian and Wisdom will actually sit down and try to work out how to put together a team and what role they should play within Britain. That was one of the things I felt was really missing from New Excalibur. So much so that I actually wrote a pub scene for the two characters for last years Superhero Idol contest on Comixfan.

There really has to be a logical approach to forming any team, and I see an interesting symmetry here with Brian and Pete to Steve Rogers and Tony Stark forming the New Avengers.

I think we know which fits which of those roles... ;)

  • Graeme Says:

I feel I should point out that the $5 fee is to defray costs for the actual awards ceremony which occurs at the Polaris convention in Toronto (a fan-run con). It's not some money-grubbing scheme-- it's just a by-fans-for-fans award ceremony that doesn't have the budget to be run any other way.

I don't think they help themselves in terms of optics by charging for it, and I'm not sure if I entirely agree with the practice, but I don't think it's worth regretting putting up the link either. And I'm going to vote for you Paul-- and I'll pay for it!

  • Michael Eckett Says:

You have a Legion of Monsters Super Skrull...Oh Paul that's got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Thank you

Oh, and I enjoyed the interview and congrats on the award nom.

  • govikes Says:

Here is one American reader who googled 'Daddy or Chips'. Tell me, does it have to do with a TV commercial?

Great interview with Newsarama Paul. Give me hint, does Dane have the "real" Ebony Blade and do me a favor, put the eagle crest on him somewhere (still needs connection to Sir Percy somehow).

    I can't wait until May 14th.

    Thanks guys!

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks, all. Argus: I shall your address your concerns, nobody shall say 'toodle pip'. Thanks very much, Factory, nothing this year. I just write these things down in online interviews without thinking, Ben. Indeed, Sword, that's the plan. Thanks, Graeme, you've swayed me to let the link stay. Thanks, Michael and correctly spotted. It does indeed, Govikes, and the eagle crest is already present, as you'll see.

  • Anonymous Says:

    Paul -

It was absolutely wonderful to meet up with you and your lovely wife at the NYCon. Just getting over it myself - the con that is, although meeting both of you was very exciting too! Hope to work with you at some point.

    All the best,

    Mike

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Mike, it was a pleasure to meet you, (it was good to see that you and Steve Epting hang out together) and yes, that would be grand.

  • Erykah Says:

    Good luck with the quiz!

Maybe next year I'll *finally* manage to get there myself.

  • BaaBaaDoodle Says:

Paul - I just read you will be at the LA DW Gallifrey One convention-20 to Life in Feb 2009. Woot! I don't know how, but I think I will try and make it to the West Coast for that. Unless you are planning any stops in between :).

  • Piers Says:

I'm afraid that SciFi London page you're getting your info from is full of fail.

It was my team that came second in the pub quiz last year... SFX came third.

  • John Toon Says:

Paul, all this forthcoming comics material is exciting me. Barring 'Wisdom', it must be more than a decade since I was excited about a Marvel title; I don't think there's ever been a time before when I was excited about more than one Marvel title at the same time. You ol' dog, you.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I've actually decided not to go to the quiz, which is a shame. I'm just so tired that I could do with lying around at home for at least one day. And yes, I shall see you in L.A.. Together with James Moran again, which'll be good. It's definitely a conspiracy, Piers. And I'm very pleased you're so excited, John. Me too.

  • Piers Says:

Aha. With you gone, first place is as good as ours...

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Let me know how you get on.

  • Piers Says:

    First.

    :)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

And the report next year will still only mention how the SFX team did. I'm sorry to see that I really am Third Row's lucky charm.

  • Pat Brien Says:

Is Moffat the guy who wrote 'Press Gang'? I loved that show (and I was way too old for it even then).

Dropped out of Doctor Who when Tom Baker ran out of jelly babies, but I saw some of the new stuff and was well impressed. Your 'Father's Day' episode was genuinely excellent. Really good stuff.

Why do I have to do a series of eye tests to send this comment?

Just found out about you (your existence and all that), from your agent's list, so he's doing a good job.

The downside is, I'm about to annoy him with a materpiece that he'll turn down 'cos he's too busy thinking about you.

Anyway, whatever. Forget about tinkering with this site (it works, doesn't it? So should you ;-) Write some more Doctor Who or something.

And I won't take "Mind your own business, tosser" as an answer (even if it is quite reasonable).

  • The Sword Is Drawn Says:

    Hi Paul,
I'm just looking over my Comics order for next week and it would seem that Captain Britain & MI:13 is no longer on the list of books coming out next week. It was due on the 14th, has it been delayed?

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thanks very much, Pat, and indeed, that's him. The eye test is because I have to approve comments before they appear. Sword: no, I asked and am told it's still on for the 14th.
