Excalibur
I'm very pleased to say that, as announced by Marvel Comics head honcho Joe Quesada yesterday at the Wizard World convention in Chicago, I'm going to be the new writer on the ongoing series Excalibur. For those of you who don't follow comics, this is the monthly adventures of (basically) the British branch of the X-Men. And that's all I'm going to say about the content (or anything else, really) for now. It's been an absolute pleasure to work with editor Nick Lowe on my Wisdom mini-series, and I'm looking forward to that relationship continuing on this new book. This is something I've always wanted to do, the one big current comic book I really wanted, and I've got many, many plans. If you haven't given super hero comics a go for a long time, or ever, I hope I might have a go at luring you to do so.
I'm planning to blog at greater length about all sorts of things tomorrow (having had three huge and splended meetings in the last two days), but tonight I just wanted to leap up and down and whoop a lot about this. Current mood: ecstatic!

That's awesome news, Paul.
Congratulations and very well done. I dip in and out of comics usually but I'll definitely take a look at your run on Excalibur, especially after enjoying Wisdom so much.
Hope there's some TV news coming as well. All the best.
R.
You know, you might be ok for that. Any good at British dialogue?
I shall drop you an email. I appear to be down London way in September. Ready the flood defences.
Mark P
Oh, well done!
I'm sure you will be splendid. You must let us know more details (such as your lineup of characters) when you can.

Wow, maybe the book will actually have British characters in it now! Haha!
I will so buy it.
This is fantastic news! I will have to quickly decide whether I'm going to fall into the monthly or TPB category on it. Will it still be "New Excalibur" (a name that to me never quite rolled the way "Excalibur" does on its own)? Who's drawing? So very glad that Marvel's "British" book now has a definitively British writer at the helm. :)
Just google searched you to find an e-mail but this works just as well. Congrats, Excalibur and Captain Britain are two of my favourite books (yes fan fiction shame right here...and not just because I'm a brit) and I know you'll do the book just as brilliantly as classic Claremont and Moore (on Cap B). Looking forward to it so much! btw your Wisdom was great too.
Fantastic news! All my best wishes for this -- they couldn't have chosen a better person for it! :D
Congratulations Paul, good to hear you getting a higher profile X-gig and that this will lead to a lot more Marvel stuff.
Mark
What wonderful news! Congratulations, Paul. Can't wait to become an EXCALIBUR fan.
All yours,
Heinberg
Congratulations, Paul. That's huge news. I was a big Excalibur fan once up on a time too. I suspect I will be again!
Excalibur? Excelsior!
Thank you very much, all, I do appreciate that. It's especially pleasant to hear from such accomplished comics writers as yourselves, Ms. Avery and Mr. Heinberg. I can't reveal any more details now, but obviously shall as news is released. And Mark, I look forward to seeing you in September.
I'll tell my X-Men mad brother !
And yay you !!
(And can I just say, randomly, I've just re-watched Human Nature/Family of Blood this week and it still zings and sings and makes me cry - brilliant !!)
Congratulations on all your writing success. I was wondering if it is possible to contact personally about appearing to talk about your writing at some point? If so could you email me at andy.evans@ntlworld.com? Many thanks.
Andy
Congratulations!
You know this may cut into your time at the pub, right...?
Congratulations Paul!
Now put Captain Midlands on the team and I will totally be your B.F.F.;)
Thank you, all. Should blog today!
Congrats on being given the book, Paul. For months I thought WISDOM was the most fun and interesting book Marvel published at the time. And I felt it deftly accomplished what TORCHWOOD should have done in wit, sheer invention and its moments of gleeful irreverence.
I'd actually known months ago that you were taking over the book when I got into a discussion with Axel about how neglected the UK in the Marvel Universe (don't worry, I wasn't pitching to take over EXCALIBUR, but thinking about miniseries). I wrote him a brief note on the potential British characters and the landscape would have, shortly before WISDOM #1 came out. Axel said what i mentioned was very similar to your plans for Excalibur, and once I read the greatly enjoyable WISDOM, I knew you would get the job.
Now I have a reason to read EXCALIBUR. Huzzah!
Well, thanks very much, and I hope you find a series also. Cheers.
Thanks, Paul. I'm not pitching anything to Marvel and the moment, though I'm in touch with DC. Not sure how much time I'll have for comics projects now that I've finished scripting my graphic novel and developing a bunch of film projects for Asia...
Still, glad you're getting stuck into the comics side of things.
Now if Panini would just reprint your WHO comics stories, I'll be well happy.
Wow! Another set I'll have to get hold of - do let us when it's due! Any in-jokes you can squeeze in for we sad cases?
I'm going to try and avoid in-jokes in this one, although a few do pop up in the comic I'm currently writing. And I've said all I can. But thanks!
Well, this may be a base comment, but it's well meant: you lucky, lucky bastard.
Always my favourite sort of praise! Ta!
Awesome. Not exactly surprising after reading Wisdom and finding out that your Editor is in charge of the X books. Bloke who does British stuff? Writing a book connected to the X-men? I wonder which one that would be. Really really looking forward to finding out what you are going to do with this. Whos the Artist? anyone we know? Have you suggested an Excaliber/Doctor Who crossover yet? Yeah, I know its far too early for that, but come on. A sad fan boy can dream cant he?
Cheers. (Bloke with the comment about Wizard magazine in hte last block of comments aka Kev)
I just saw your Doctor Who episode. I gotta tell you, I have not really like any episode in the last two years, but yours was exceptional. Even my wife who generally doesn't like SF like it. I know from that you would make a great comic writer. I have not gotten x-men in a long while so i'll have to try this. GREAT STUFF... CONGRATS.
Paul that's bloody brilliant news! I still have all my individual copies of the first run of Excalibur on my shelf and it remains my all time fave Marvel book. Loved 'Wisdom' so am really excited about this :-)
Haven't read the new new version of Excalibur - was so disappointed by that dismal Genosha thing they launched as Excalibur a while back that I was kind of soured on the idea - but now I know you're taking over I'll give it a read in preparation for your run.
Thanks very much, all. I'm back from Japan, so able to reply to comments again. Hope you like Excalibur when you see it. Cheers.
Excalibur was a firm favourite of mine during the original series, and is a title that benefits greatly from having a British writer on it - I've always found Chris Claremont's view of England to be a bit Dick Van Dyke for my taste.
I've read a lot of Paul Cornell's books (being a huge Doctor Who fan) and found it to be both entertaining, thought provoking and very readable, so I am delighted to see that he'll be writing Excalibur in the following months.
Keep up the good work fella!
Thanks very much, Sean. It's odd to see myself referred to in the third person here! Cheers.
