Looking Forward to Saturday

I just got the full, inked, lettered (though not yet coloured) first issue of Wisdom to check over, and I tell you, I almost cried. Another lifetime's ambition come true. We've lucked out in that our inker is Paul Neary, one of the greats, and he and Trev go together like egg and chips. I read it three times, just to make sure it was real, and then hustled my wife (for the purposes of this entry she is no longer a metaphorical Robin Hood) in from the other room to read it. Wow. And in a few short weeks it'll be an actual comic I can hold in my hands. And sniff. I'll probably give it a good smelling. To see how much it smells like an Avengers comic bought from the newsagents in Lyneham, Wiltshire, in the early 1970s.

We're having a small party for the Robin Hood broadcast. It's been a busy week in that I've been scripting my own show re-pitch script, writing a horror short story, finishing the plot of one prose thing and getting back to the other prose thing. And I went to a Who readthrough, Helen Raynor's two-parter, which blew me away. I may have a new favourite if they land that thing right. If Season One was Songs to Learn and Sing, and Season Two was Pet Sounds, Season Three is Bat Out of Hell. It's that huge and bold and firing on all cylinders.

Anyway, the blog will resume shortly. Possibly on Sunday morning, after I've cleared up. Until then, Cheerio.

If Laura and I are in the neighbourhood, can we come to the Robin Hood party? (You can safely say yes, since we won't be anywhere near Europe this weekend, as we're hosting our annual Who-loween party.) We just watched the first episode, and this is going to be a very fun Robin Hood to watch. Yes, we'll be sure to gush over your episode when we get a chance to see it.

  • Alison Scott Says:

Good luck for Saturday, Paul! We'll be watching (probably with my Aged Parents). Marianne (the 9 year old) absolutely loves the show: you've probably got a Fan For Life there.

    Wow.

    THANK YOU!!!!!

You are seriously the best thing that has happened to Pete Wisdom since Warren Ellis created him. I'm putting all my faith into you. Please don't let me down. :( I've been disappointed with comic books for so long.

It's nice that somebody is finally pulling Pete out of the X-Verse and letting him do what he does best. :D What could be better is if you bring Kitty Pryde in for the ride.

  • Pádraig Ó Méalóid Says:

We will both be nailed to the couch on Saturday, never fear. I'm really looking forward to seeing the comic, too, which I will duly present for signing at the Dublin Comic Con.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Oh, everyone who can't come along is definitely invited. (I can now channel Sheriff dialogue.) Good to hear about the nine year old reaction. Thank you all. And thanks particularly, Jen. But you don't know that yet! Actually, I think because of Trev and Paul's contributions, I can happily say you're going to be happy. And we haven't got Kitty along for the ride, but I'd really like to in the future.

  • Skeeter Says:

Good luck for Saturday Paul, from the trailer it looks an intriguing concept and I will watch with great interest (and not a little bragging to other people that I know a proper writer (although that's an exaggeration as I've only actually talked to you twice but hey, I live vicariously.)) Also congrats on the comic!

  • Martin Hoscik Says:

Good luck with the episode Paul - I know many people are looking forward to it.

  • Anonymous Says:

I'm trying to be sneaky and read (sorry meant review) Wisdom now. Jim @ Marvel you are my only hope.

Hey Paul! Good luck for the upcoming show on Saturday. First show was the usual "getting to know the characters" affair, I think. Second show was better. Now really looking forward to this weekend's show, written by a top author/screenwriter... :-)

  • LJC Says:

I have to go away and visit family this week-end i teh land of no high-speed internet access (i.e. Florida-la), so I most likely won't catch the episode until Tuesday. But I shall be thinking o you! Have a fantastic viewing party.

  • Jen the Fangirl Says:

    You're welcome :D

But I'm having hopes. You obviously have a love and appreciation for Pete. Both of those are necessary to write him as he's meant to be written. Plus, you're British; that's another plus! :)

And finally, and a really great point, too, I think: you've written Who! I've fallen in love with Doctor Who based on the two new series. The level of writing on the series is incredible compared to the majority of programmes I see on TV right now. Well written dialogue, excellent characterization, mentions of popular culture, and an analysis of aspects of human kind. What more can a Science Fiction fangirl ask for?

Not being a Who fan until recently, I completely missed the homage to Who in Excalibur: Alistaire Stuart and W.H.O. Out of curiosity, will you be bringing Alistaire back? he was one of my favorite allies of Excalibur.

I'll keep hoping that she can make an appearece in the future. The "reunion" in New Excalibur 1 wasn't what I think it could have been. All of that chemistry that Ellis showed between them was completely lost. And even when they were at odds with one another they still had that chemistry.

Just to give you some more idea about my invested interest in Pete (though I think it's kind of clear! *laughs*), this is an interview
I recently gave on Silver Bullet Comics. I mention Pete and even yourself.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

It's really lovely to get all those good wishes. Cheers! Can't wait to see your review in Fractal Matter, Mark.

  • Cath Says:

LOL - the glossy stuff doesn't smell quite a same as the lovely old paper ones - looking forward to reading it once :)

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Cath! Reading it *once*?! What kind of Pete fan are you? And yeah, I agree, the smell of old comics... mmm.

  • cath Says:

heh - that should have said once it comes out and my fangirl-fu is weak these days but I'm a sentimental bugger.

O.k maybe I'll read it twice...

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I kind of thought that was what you meant!
