Right - that's it. There has been far too much approval on the comments section for Mr Cornell..

I'm going to have to leave a (cruel, yet honest) comment on the 'Pete Wisdom' part of this blog.

Now, *please* understand (before you send me any criticism ) that I only do this because Paul is excellent at everything he turns his hand to - apart from one thing.

And - though I point out this failure - I'm not doing it in any way to increase Paul's Google rank/comment-rating on his blog.

You cynical people ... I do it because I am *honest*.

    Yours, with proud despair

    Simon Kavanagh

PS Paul, will this do? Will you let me know?

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Thank you, David. Simon is my agent. You'd never have guessed, would you? I've found that his comments continue on another part of the blog. So now I'm off to find out where...

Hey Paul, you remember I chased up the Faringdon "What's On" website people about FAF? After a nice chap called Gene told me he'd pass my comments on to the committee I heard nothing more, and yet this very morning I was spammed by someone of the (unusual) name of Cleveland Gibson, trying to cold-sell me his Faringdon-based thriller. Indignant splutterings! And as if that weren't rich enough, he's got the nerve to invite me to join the Faringdon Writers for a meet-up at the FAF!!

I know it's not strictly your concern, but please, please, if you should see Mr Gibson or any of the FAF committee soon, give 'em a sturdy kick in the shins from me, wouldja?

I received the following e-mail this morning, which I thought you might also find hilarious:

    Dear Amazon.com Customer,

As someone who has purchased books by Paul Cornell, you might like to know that Beginning Excel PivotTables: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: from Novice to Professional) will be released in paperback soon. You can pre-order your copy at a savings of 37% by following the link below.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I'm sorry to hear that, John. Gene's pronounced 'Jenny'. Cleve's not a member of the FAF committee, he was one of the local writers who got together in previous years at the event, so I don't know how he could have got your e-mail address. It's possible that he just saw you on here. I doubt that Gene gives out lists of addresses, she's the soul of discretion, and I'm really pretty certain FAF wouldn't do that either. Did he say how he got your address? I'll ask around a bit and try to find out. I hope that hasn't happened to anyone else.

Stewart: like yourself, I had almost lost hope of BEPT:FNTP(B:FNTP) coming out in paperback. Pivot Tables are something that's very important to me. Otherwise where would we get that vital mealtime excitement? I'm glad Amazon have at last recognised my interest in the field. (Is it possible there's yet another author Paul Cornell out there, apart from me and the ornithologist?)

  • john toon Says:

Sorry, *Gene* (pronounced "Jenny"). Genevieve, presumably.

Cleveland didn't tell me a damn thing, except that "Faringdon is great to read about, and write also"; he also mentioned that "MOONDUST, the book," (I'm guessing the other book, not the one by Stephen Baxter) "is finished", and if I wanted to take a look at "the thriller featuring Faringdon right from the start" I should click on the hyperlink that followed. Also, if I "fancied joining 'Faringdon Writers' and meeting up at the Arts Festival in July" (the one a month ago or the one eleven months away?!), and then he gave his email address. "Faringdon is great to read about" was his opening line, and this along with the general impersonal blurb feel of the mail says "spam" to me. The title of his mail was "Guest Book", so possibly he's trawled it from there. I'd still appreciate some kickage of shin.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

I've talked to Gene, and she says that she doesn't give out e-mail addresses, and only sends out her e-newsletter to those that subscribe to it. More on this when I've found out more.

  • Dave Owen Says:

Pivot Tables are actually pretty nifty: I use them at work a lot. Next time I see you, ask me for a demo.

  • Paul Cornell Says:

The things I'm meant to know about. Pivot tables, the cry of the loon...

  • john toon Says:

My fluff, the Stephen Baxter book was "Moonseed". I may have been confusing it with Arthur C Clarke's "A Fall of Moondust". I haven't actually read any of the books named on this page, that's my excuse.

  • ian gordon Says:

I was convinved that by now you'd have got one featuring the guy from Big Brother....

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Guy from Big Brother... presumably he's called Peter? Remember what I said about me not watching broadcast televsion? Especially that.

  • Mark Roberts Says:

I can see it now Peter War: I'm with *$%£ tweet tweet Wanker!

  • Paul Cornell Says:

Oh, right, that one, I've heard people talking about him.
